Step by step

Arrival instructions, step by step

The hall of desks between customs and the exit is the only thing standing between you and your driver.

  1. 1. Immigration

Have your passport and hotel name ready. SJD moves quickly except on Saturdays, when most US charters land between 11 and 16 h.

  2. 2. Baggage reclaim and customs

Collect your bags and press the customs button. Green and you walk on, red and your bag goes through the scanner.

  3. 3. The tour and “transport” desks

After customs you cross a hall of counters. They will ask which hotel you are staying at and offer a free lift or a free breakfast. They sell timeshare presentations. Your driver is outside, not here.

  4. 4. Out the terminal doors

Keep going to the exit. Nobody inside the building is your driver, whatever the badge says.

  5. 5. Find the name board

The cerb is short and your driver is within sight of the doors, holding an eTransfers name board. Photo and number plate are in MyTrip before you land.

  6. 6. Twenty minutes, or forty-five

San Jose del Cabo is 20 minutes. The corridor is 30. Cabo San Lucas is 40 to 45 on the four-lane road.

Terminal 1 and Terminal 2

Terminal 1 is domestic, Terminal 2 is international. Almost every visitor flying in from the United States or Canada lands in Terminal 2.

The old Terminal 3 was absorbed into Terminal 2 between 2018 and 2020, so any guide that still mentions three terminals is out of date.

Safety first

What to watch for at Los Cabos Airport

Los Cabos is one of the calmest arrivals in Mexico. The selling in the hall is the only friction.

The desks after customs

They look like transport companies and they sell timeshare. The “free transport” costs you a morning of your holiday.

The pirates are outside because they cannot get in

To pick up inside SJD, GAP — the group that runs the airport — requires each vehicle’s registration, carrying the federal number plates and the SICT permit, plus current insurance and several other requirements. Anything picking up outside the perimeter meets none of it and covers you for nothing.

Verify photo and number plate

Driver name, photo and number plate are in MyTrip before you land. Only get into the vehicle whose number plates we sent you.

Nobody should ask you for tolls

There are no toll booths between the airport and either town. The transfer is prepaid; there is nothing to pay on the road.

Cabo runs on dollars, and it costs you

Prices all over Los Cabos are quoted in dollars at a rate that favors the shop. Pay by card or carry pesos.

From our local team

Tips from our local team

Our own Los Cabos team, answering what travellers ask.

eTransfers team at Los Cabos AirportAt Los Cabos Airport since 2014 Verified by our team at SJD
  • San Jose or Cabo San Lucas?

San Jose del Cabo is quiet, colonial and near the airport. Cabo San Lucas is the marina, the nightlife and the arch. The corridor between them is where most of the big resorts are.

  • Which beaches you can swim at

Most of the Pacific-facing coast has a brutal shore break and is not swimmable. Medano in Cabo San Lucas, Chileno and Santa Maria on the corridor are the safe ones.

  • Pesos or dollars?

Dollars work everywhere and you lose on every transaction. Pay by card where you can.

  • How much to tip

Drivers: 100 pesos or about $5 for a standard transfer. Restaurants: 15%, and check whether service is already on the bill.

  • Whale season

Grey and humpback whales are in these waters from December to April. Boats leave from the Cabo San Lucas marina.

  • Stop at the supermarket

A twenty-minute stop at a Chedraui or La Comer on the way saves a fortune on resort water and snacks. It is included with Premium; on Economy it may cost extra.

Shared shuttles drop off along the corridor in whatever order suits the van, so a Cabo San Lucas hotel is usually last. Hire car insurance in Mexico is mandatory and is rarely included in the price you see online.

Terminal 2 concentrates the US departures in the morning and the check-in queues are the slow part, not security.

  • Domestic flightsPick-up 2 hours before departure, plus the drive from your hotel.
  • International flightsPick-up 3 hours before departure, plus journey time. From Cabo San Lucas that means leaving about four hours before your flight.
  • The night beforeIAN sends your exact pick-up time and the driver details. Move it from MyTrip if your plans change.
