Private fleet

The vehicles that work this airport

Private, air conditioned and insured, with a bilingual driver. Groups arriving together for a wedding are normal here; tell us the numbers and we plan the vehicles.

Step by step

Arrival instructions, step by step

The most pleasant arrival in the Caribbean: open-air terminals with palm-frond roofs and a short walk to the pick-up area.

  1. 1. The e-Ticket and immigration

The Dominican e-Ticket is free and filled online before you fly; have the QR ready on your phone. The tourist card is already included in almost every airline ticket, so nobody at the airport should charge you for it again.

  2. 2. Have your return ticket handy

Since 28 April 2023 the airline is required to check that every foreign passenger holds an onward or return ticket. Without one you can be refused entry, and the check happens at the counter, not on landing.

  3. 3. Flying in from Brazil or Venezuela? Yellow fever

The Dominican Republic requires an international vaccination certificate from anyone arriving from Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo, and from every passenger coming from Venezuela. It has to be at least ten days old. Confirm with your airline before you fly.

  4. 4. Baggage reclaim and customs

Collect your bags and walk through customs. Random checks are quick.

  5. 5. Porters and helpers

Porters at the belt expect a tip and “helpers” who take your trolley expect more. Keep your own trolley until you reach your driver; a dollar or two is plenty if you do want the help.

  6. 6. Out into the open air

There is no timeshare hall here. You walk out of the terminal into the covered pick-up area.

  7. 7. Find the name board

Your driver waits in the pick-up area with an eTransfers name board. Photo and number plate are in MyTrip before you land.

  8. 8. Twenty minutes to Bavaro

Cap Cana is 15 minutes, Bavaro and Punta Cana village 20 to 30, Uvero Alto about an hour on the coastal road.

Terminal A and Terminal B

Two commercial terminals, both open-air with thatched roofs. Terminal B is the newer one with jet bridges; Terminal A still boards with stairs, which is part of the charm.

Safety first

What to watch for at Punta Cana Airport

A calm, well-run airport. The friction here is about money, not safety.

The tourist card is already paid

It has been included in airline tickets for years. If anyone at the airport asks you for $10 for a tourist card, it is not official.

Porters at the belt

Tipping is normal and expected, but agree it is a tip and not a fee. Two or three dollars covers it.

Dollars work, change does not

You can pay in dollars all over the resort zone, but change comes back in pesos at a rate the shop chooses. Carry small bills.

Verify photo and number plate

Driver name, photo and number plate are in MyTrip before you land.

The road at night is fine

The main road to Bavaro and Uvero Alto is lit and patrolled, and our drivers work it around the clock. Late arrivals are routine.

From our local team

Tips from our local team

Our own Punta Cana team, answering what travellers ask.

eTransfers team at Punta Cana AirportAt Punta Cana Airport since 2016 Verified by our team at PUJ
  • Fill in the e-Ticket before you fly

It is free, it takes five minutes and it covers entry and exit. Do it at home; the airport wifi is not where you want to be filling forms.

  • Pesos or dollars?

Dollars are accepted everywhere in the resort zone. Pesos are better value anywhere else, and much better for tips.

  • How much to tip

Drivers: $5 to $10 for a standard transfer. Most resorts are all-inclusive, but a dollar or two per drink or per bag goes a long way.

  • Bavaro and Punta Cana are not the same

Punta Cana is the southern tip near the airport and Cap Cana. Bavaro is the long resort beach to the north. Most “Punta Cana” hotels are in Bavaro.

  • When to come

December to April is dry and busy. Hurricane season runs June to November; direct hits are rare and the resorts handle them well.

  • Which beach

Bavaro and Arena Gorda are the long calm stretches. Macao is beautiful and has real waves. Uvero Alto is the quiet end, and the furthest from the airport.
