The corridor: where the resorts are, and where the two good beaches are
Between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas there are 33 kilometers of highway along a desert coastline, and almost every large resort in Los Cabos is on it. It is not a place — there is no village, no square, nowhere to walk to — but it holds the two beaches in Los Cabos that are genuinely safe to swim at, which is why people keep booking it.
What the corridor is
Highway 1, running above the sea, with resorts, golf courses and a handful of shopping plazas hanging off it. The midpoint is about 18 km from the airport. Each property has its own access road down to the water, and between them there is desert and cactus.
Because there is no town, everything you do is either inside your resort or in a vehicle. That is the defining fact of staying here and the thing people underestimate.
Chileno and Santa María
These two are the reason the corridor exists as a choice. Both are sheltered coves with rock at the edges, calm water and enough fish to make a snorkel worthwhile — and in a destination where most of the coast has a lethal shore break, that is not a small thing.
Playa Chileno
The larger of the two, with parking, toilets and a Blue Flag. Gets busy; go early.
Playa Santa María
Smaller, horseshoe-shaped, and the better snorkel of the two. Limited parking, no services to speak of.
Playa Palmilla
At the San José end, protected and shallow. The family beach.
Everything else
Assume it is not swimmable unless something tells you otherwise. The flags here matter.
Golf is the corridor’s other product
Most of the signature courses in Los Cabos are along here, several of them on the water. If golf is the reason for the trip, the corridor is the obvious base and the transfer times to the tees are the shortest.
Living here for a week
Eating
Your resort, or a drive. There are restaurants in the plazas along the highway, but nothing you will stroll to after dinner.
Getting out
San José is 10 to 20 minutes depending where you are, Cabo San Lucas 15 to 30. Taxis are negotiated and add up fast.
A car
Makes more sense here than anywhere else in Los Cabos. Highway 1 is straightforward and the resort entrances are well signed.
Quiet
Genuinely quiet, which is the appeal. Nothing outside your gate will wake you up.
