Areas of the town

Tulum town or the Hotel Zone: which one is yours

This page covers the town. The beachfront hotels are in a different zone, with their own rate.

Tulum town · this page

The town centre, on Highway 307: the ADO station, the supermarket, the cash machines and most of the restaurants. Hotels and holiday rentals in town are covered by this rate.

Tulum Hotel Zone

The single-lane beach road running south from the ruins, lined with beachfront hotels. It is a separate zone with its own rate: look for Tulum Hotel Zone under Destinations.

In between

From town to the beach road junction it is about 4 km (2.5 miles) along the road to Coba, with a cycle lane; from there the strip runs another 6 to 8 km south. If your hotel says "Tulum" and sits on the beach, it is in the Hotel Zone.

  • What time should I book the pick-up for?

On arrival you don’t choose: we read the flight number and the driver is there when you land, however late it is. For the way back we confirm the exact time the evening before, allowing 1 h 35 min on the road plus the check-in window.

  • Is it worth it for two people?

The price is per vehicle, so two people pay the same $125 as four. Against two airport taxi fares it usually wins; against one, it’s about even, and you get a fixed price and a driver who waits.

  • We’re bringing a lot of luggage

One suitcase and one piece of hand luggage per passenger is included and nothing is charged per bag. Golf clubs, surfboards, pushchairs and wheelchairs fit — tell us when you book so we send the right vehicle, at no extra cost.

  • Can we stop on the way?

Yes. A stop at a supermarket or a chemist is the one almost everybody asks for, and it’s added when you book rather than agreed with the driver.

Questions about getting to Tulum Centro

Is this page for Tulum town or the Hotel Zone?
For Tulum town, the centre on Highway 307. The Hotel Zone —the beachfront hotels along the coast road— is a separate zone with its own rate and its own page: you will find it as Tulum Hotel Zone under Destinations. If you are not sure which one your hotel is in, type it into the search box and you will get the right price.
How do I get from Cancun to Tulum?
From the airport there are four ways. Private transfer: 1 h 35 min without traffic to your door, from $125 per vehicle. ADO coach: $445 MXN per person and 2 h 20 min to 2 h 40 min to the coach station in town. Tren Maya: the official timetable lists a departure from Cancun Aeropuerto station to Tulum Aeropuerto at 10:46. Hire car: the same road and the same journey time as the transfer, plus the car hire desk and finding somewhere to park in Tulum. ADO and Tren Maya figures as of September 2026.
Is there an ADO bus from Cancun Airport to Tulum?
Yes, straight to the ADO station in Tulum town: $445 MXN per person. It takes about 2 h 20 min from Terminal 2 and about 2 h 40 min from Terminal 3, and the last coach of the day leaves at around 20:00, according to ADO as of September 2026. It drops you in town: if your hotel is in the Hotel Zone, you still need a taxi.
Can I take the Tren Maya from Cancun to Tulum?
Yes, on a fixed timetable. The Cancun station is Cancun Aeropuerto, and Tulum has two: Tulum and Tulum Aeropuerto. As of September 2026, the official timetable lists a departure from Cancun to Tulum Aeropuerto at 10:46, arriving at 12:50; if your flight lands later, that train will not work for you. Check the fare on the official Tren Maya booking site.
Should I hire a car to get to Tulum?
It is the same Highway 307 and the same journey time as the transfer, 1 h 35 min without traffic, plus the queue at the car hire desk. The hard part comes in Tulum: parking in town and on the beach road is difficult. It is worth it if you plan to tour cenotes and Coba; for the airport run there and back, a transfer is simpler.
How far is Tulum from Cancun Airport?
About 120 km (75 miles) along Highway 307, roughly 1 h 35 min by private vehicle. Add about 20 minutes if you land between 2pm and 6pm, when arrivals pile up at the terminal exits.
Can I book a transfer from Tulum back to Cancun Airport?
Yes. The return leg costs the same as the arrival, $125 per vehicle, and we pick you up at your hotel, holiday rental or beach club in Tulum. Booking both legs together as a return costs $240, less than two separate one-way journeys. Plan to leave Tulum about four hours before an international flight and three before a domestic one.
What is the cheapest way to get from Cancun Airport to Tulum?
If you are travelling alone, the ADO coach. From three or four people upwards the private vehicle costs less per head: the price is per vehicle, not per seat, and it includes luggage, tolls and door-to-door drop-off.
Is the transfer from Cancun to Tulum safe?
Yes. Every vehicle is licensed for federal transport, insured for passengers and air-conditioned, and driven by a professional bilingual driver. You pay online in advance, so there is no cash on the road.
How long does it take to get from Cancun Airport to Tulum Centro?
About 1 h 35 min without traffic, worked out from distance and speed limits. At rush hour it can take longer; the price stays the same.
How much is a transfer from Cancun Airport to Tulum Centro?
From $125 per vehicle one way, with taxes, tolls and luggage included. It’s a price per vehicle, not per person, so a family or a group shares it. You’ll find the full list by vehicle further up this page.
Is the price per person or per vehicle?
Per vehicle. One price covers every seat in it, and child seats are free and don’t take up a paid seat. The more of you there are, the less it costs each.
Is it cheaper than a taxi?
Almost always, and more importantly you know the price in advance. Airport taxis are a concession with a fixed fare per zone, posted at the exit and not negotiable, and they usually sit well above a transfer booked ahead.
Can I use a ride-hailing app instead?
Ride-hailing apps work in the area but can’t pick up inside the airport, and at night there may be nothing available. What you’ll find at the terminal are the authorised taxis. A pre-booked transfer is the only option with the price fixed before you land.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Nothing. We track the flight number, the driver adjusts, and the price is the same. That’s the whole reason we ask for the flight number when you book.
Can I cancel?
With the Premium fare, yes: free up to 24 hours before pick-up, no questions asked and no fee, and changes are free up to 12 hours before. The Economy fare, the cheapest one, has no free cancellation, but it includes one change if you let us know at least 24 hours ahead.
