Tips from our team for Isla Mujeres Ferry

What travellers ask us most about this route, answered by the people who drive it.

eTransfers local teamDriving this route since 2010 Verified by our team at CUN
  • If you land at night

Go to Puerto Juarez: the last ferry leaves at 23:00. At the Hotel Zone piers the last boat leaves between 17:00 and 19:00, and a delayed flight there means no crossing.

  • Buy an open ticket

Ultramar tickets are valid for six months on any day and any departure on the route, and Xcaret Xailing open tickets work on any available departure. That way it doesn’t matter when your plane lands.

  • Luggage on the ferry

Ultramar includes one bag of up to 25 kg per ticket. If you have more, mention it at the ticket office before boarding; your driver drops you and all your bags at the pier.

  • Can we stop on the way?

Yes. A stop at a supermarket or a chemist is the one almost everybody asks for, and it’s added when you book rather than agreed with the driver.

Questions about getting to Isla Mujeres Ferry

Which pier does the Isla Mujeres ferry leave from?
Coming from the airport, go to Puerto Juarez: the Ultramar terminal on Avenida Lopez Portillo, just north of Cancun city centre. It has the most departures, and it opens earliest and closes latest. The Hotel Zone piers —El Embarcadero at km 4.5, run by Xcaret Xailing, and Playa Tortugas at km 6.5 and Playa Caracol at km 9.5, run by Ultramar— make sense if you are already staying in the Hotel Zone, but they have fewer departures and the last boat leaves between 17:00 and 19:00.
How far is Puerto Juarez from Cancun Airport?
About 22 km (14 miles) by road. That is 35 min without traffic; at rush hour it can take longer, and the price stays the same.
How much is the ferry to Isla Mujeres?
Per person, as of September 2026: Ultramar charges $290 MXN one way and $580 MXN return per adult, and $220 and $440 MXN per child, the same from Puerto Juarez, Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol, plus a $36.56 MXN environmental sanitation fee required by the municipality. Xcaret Xailing, from El Embarcadero, charges $295 MXN one way and $590 MXN return per adult, and $225 and $450 MXN per child aged 6 to 11. Quintana Roo residents and INAPAM cardholders pay less.
What time does the Isla Mujeres ferry leave?
On the timetables published as of September 2026: from Puerto Juarez, Ultramar sails from 05:30 to 23:00, every half hour for most of the day and hourly after 18:00; the last boat back from the island leaves at midnight. The Hotel Zone has fewer: El Embarcadero, hourly from 09:00 to 19:00; Playa Tortugas, 09:15 to 18:00; and Playa Caracol, 09:00 to 17:00. In bad weather the harbour master can halt crossings.
How long is the ferry crossing to Isla Mujeres?
About 20 minutes from Cancun, according to the Quintana Roo Tourism Board. The ferry companies ask you to be at the terminal 30 minutes before departure.
How much is a taxi from the airport to Puerto Juarez?
The airport does not publish the fare: the site of ASUR, which runs the airport, lists the taxi service but not its prices, and there is no official published rate, so we will not quote a figure we cannot back up. Airport taxis charge a fixed fare by zone, which you see at the counter before you pay. Our transfer to Puerto Juarez starts at $45 per vehicle, fixed before you fly.
Is there an ADO bus from the airport to Puerto Juarez?
Not directly. ADO coaches run from airport Terminals 2, 3 and 4 to the ADO station in Cancun city centre: $145 MXN per person, about an hour, with departures every 20 to 40 minutes until close to midnight, according to ADO as of September 2026. From that station to Puerto Juarez you still need a taxi or a local bus, with your bags.
How much is the transfer from the airport to Puerto Juarez?
From $45 per vehicle one way, with taxes and luggage included and drop-off at the ferry pier. The price is per vehicle, not per person. The ferry ticket is not included: you buy it at the ticket office or online from the ferry company.
Can I use a ride-hailing app instead?
Ride-hailing apps work in the area but can’t pick up inside the airport, and at night there may be nothing available. What you’ll find at the terminal are the authorised taxis. A pre-booked transfer is the only option with the price fixed before you land.
Can I cancel?
With the Premium fare, yes: free up to 24 hours before pick-up, no questions asked and no fee, and changes are free up to 12 hours before. The Economy fare, the cheapest one, has no free cancellation, but it includes one change if you let us know at least 24 hours ahead.
