Fixed prices per vehicle

Where are you going from Miami Airport?

MIA sits west of the city, so almost everything is a twenty to forty minute drive. Fixed rates per vehicle, not per person.

Step by step

Arrival instructions, step by step

MIA is big. The one thing to get right is that everything happens on Level 1, and Level 1 is arrivals.

  1. 1. Immigration

US citizens and residents, and Global Entry holders, use the kiosks. Everyone else joins the visitors’ queue, which at MIA is genuinely long when several wide-bodies land together.

  2. 2. The laser visa works for flying, with a passport

Mexico’s border crossing card (DSP-150) is a B-1/B-2 visa, so it works for flying to Miami or Orlando. The one thing to remember is that arriving by air you always present it together with a valid Mexican passport: the card on its own will not get you on the plane.

  3. 3. A connection in the United States counts as entry

There is no airside international transit here: everyone who lands clears immigration, collects their bag and rechecks it. If you are only connecting onward to another country, you still need an ESTA or a visa. Without one you will not be allowed to board at origin.

  4. 4. Baggage reclaim and customs

Collect your bags, clear customs, and if you are connecting you re-check them right there.

  5. 5. Go to Level 1

Every terminal at MIA has three levels and ground transport is on Level 1, the arrivals level. If you came out of Customs at Concourse J, take the lift down.

  6. 6. Find the name board

Your driver meets you on the ground transport level of your terminal, holding an eTransfers board. Photo and number plate are in MyTrip before you land.

  7. 7. Twenty minutes to the city centre

The city centre and Brickell are twenty minutes without traffic, South Beach about thirty, Fort Lauderdale forty-five.

Airport rates are the worst in the region. Pay by card or withdraw at your destination.

Pay at the door, or use Priority Pass or similar.

Luggage storage

From 11 USD per bag.

Pharmacy

For the basics: painkillers, travel sickness tablets, sun cream. Cheaper in town.

Duty free

Not automatically cheaper. Compare before you buy, and check the liquid rules of your connection.

Restaurants and cafés

Most of it is airside, past security. Don’t linger before you go through.

Safety first

What to watch for at Miami Airport

A safe, heavily policed airport. The problems here are about money and about which level you are standing on.

Unlicensed drivers inside the terminal

Nobody licensed touts for fares inside a US airport terminal. Anyone offering you a lift at baggage reclaim is operating illegally.

Wrong level, wrong meeting

Departures is Level 2, arrivals and ground transport are Level 1. Most missed pick-ups at MIA are a level problem, not a driver problem.

Surge pricing on the apps

MIA is one of the worst airports in the country for surge. A prepaid transfer costs what it said in January, whatever is happening outside.

Verify photo and number plate

Driver name, photo and number plate are in MyTrip before you land.

Tolls are everywhere

South Florida expressways are all-electronic toll. Your transfer includes them; a hire car will bill them to you weeks later with a fee on top.

Tips from our team in Florida

What travellers ask us about getting out of MIA.

eTransfers team in FloridaServing Miami since 2019 Verified by our team at MIA
  • Going to a cruise

PortMiami is twenty minutes from the airport and Port Everglades about forty. Cruise lines sell their own transfer; it costs per person and leaves when the coach is full.

  • Traffic is the whole story

The drive to South Beach is twenty-five minutes at 11am and an hour at 6pm. Build it into your plans, not into your hope.

  • The Metrorail

From Miami Central Station, reached by the free MIA Mover, the Metrorail runs to the city centre and Brickell. It is cheap and useful without luggage; with three cases it is not.

  • Hurricane season

June to November. Miami handles storms well, but flight schedules do not; travel insurance is worth it in September.

  • Hiring a car

The Rental Car Center is a MIA Mover trip away from the terminals. Between that, the counter queue and the tolls, the first ninety minutes of your holiday are gone.

Your return to Miami Airport

MIA security queues are long and the traffic getting there is longer. Both go into the pick-up time.

  • Domestic flightsPick-up 2 hours before departure, plus the drive from your hotel.
  • International flightsPick-up 3 hours before departure, plus journey time. MIA is one of the busiest international airports in the country and it shows at check-in.

Miami Airport transfer questions

Where exactly do we meet?
On Level 1, signed “Ground Transportation”, in your concourse. Every terminal at MIA has three levels and Level 1 is arrivals.
I am arriving at Concourse J. Is that different?
Slightly. Customs at the South Terminal exits on an upper level; take the lift down to Level 1 and you are in the right place.
Do you go to PortMiami and Port Everglades?
Yes, both. PortMiami is about twenty minutes and Port Everglades about forty, at a fixed price with tolls included.
Are tolls included?
Yes. South Florida runs all-electronic tolling and they are already in your price.
How far is Fort Lauderdale?
About forty-five minutes without traffic. Longer at rush hour, which in South Florida is most of the afternoon.
Is the price the same at night?
Yes. It is the price you booked, with no surge, no night surcharge and no airport fee on top.
