Private fleet

The vehicles that work this airport

Private, air conditioned and insured, with a bilingual driver. The cross-country run to Punta Cana is two and a half hours, so the vehicle matters.

Step by step

Arrival instructions, step by step

A single arrivals exit and a busy cerb. The important part is knowing where to stand.

  1. 1. The e-Ticket and immigration

The Dominican e-Ticket is free and filled online before you fly; have the QR ready. The tourist card is already included in almost every airline ticket.

  2. 2. Have your return ticket handy

Since 28 April 2023 the airline is required to check that every foreign passenger holds an onward or return ticket. Without one you can be refused entry, and the check happens at the counter, not on landing.

  3. 3. Flying in from Brazil or Venezuela? Yellow fever

The Dominican Republic requires an international vaccination certificate from anyone arriving from Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo, and from every passenger coming from Venezuela. It has to be at least ten days old. Confirm with your airline before you fly.

  4. 4. Baggage reclaim and customs

Collect your bags and walk through customs. Checks are quick and routine.

  5. 5. Past the taxi and car hire desks

After customs there is a short corridor of taxi and car hire counters. Walk past them to the exit; your driver is outside.

  6. 6. Find the name board at the barrier

The arrivals cerb is busy. Your driver waits at the barrier outside the doors with an eTransfers name board, then walks you to the vehicle.

  7. 7. A prepaid SIM, if you want one

Claro and Altice have desks just after customs at fair prices. It is easier here than in the city.

  8. 8. Thirty minutes to the Colonial Zone

Boca Chica is fifteen minutes, the Colonial Zone and Piantini thirty to forty on the coast road, Juan Dolio about forty.

Terminal A and Terminal B

SDQ works as one building with two gate areas: Terminal A with five gates and Terminal B with four plus a remote stand. Arrivals from both come out through the same exit.

A new terminal is under construction and expected around 2028. Until then, arrivals are a single exit and there is nothing to get wrong.

Free Wi-Fi

Cash machines

In the arrivals hall and landside. Cash machines in town give a better rate.

Currency exchange

Airport rates are the worst in the region. Pay by card or withdraw at your destination.

No lockers and no left-luggage desk. Plan for it if you have hours to kill.

Duty free

Not automatically cheaper. Compare before you buy, and check the liquid rules of your connection.

What to watch for at Santo Domingo Airport

Las Americas is a working airport for a capital city, not a resort airport. The crowd at the barrier is the thing to know about.

Taxi touts at the barrier

Licensed airport taxis have a counter inside. Anyone offering a “cheaper” lift at the barrier is not licensed and the price will move.

Verify photo and number plate

Driver name, photo and number plate are in MyTrip before you land. Our driver knows your name; you should not have to explain who you are.

Never pay twice

The transfer is prepaid, tolls included. No driver of ours asks for toll money on the motorway.

Change money in the city

Airport exchange rates are poor. Bank cash machines in the city give the real rate, and cards work everywhere in Piantini and the Colonial Zone.

Arriving late

The motorway into the city is fast and lit, and we work it around the clock. Late arrivals are routine.

Tips from our local team

Our own Santo Domingo team, answering what travellers ask.

eTransfers team at Santo Domingo AirportAt Las Americas since 2016 Verified by our team at SDQ
  • Where to stay

The Colonial Zone is the historic centre and the reason most people come. Piantini and Naco are the modern business districts. Boca Chica and Juan Dolio are the nearest beaches.

  • Fill in the e-Ticket before you fly

Free, five minutes, covers entry and exit. Doing it at the airport on hotel wifi is nobody’s idea of a holiday.

  • Pesos, not dollars

Unlike the resort zones, Santo Domingo runs on pesos. A bank cash machine in the city is the best rate you will get.

  • SDQ or PUJ for Punta Cana?

Fly into PUJ if you can. SDQ to Punta Cana is two and a half hours by road, which is worth it only when the fare difference is large.

  • Prepaid SIM at the exit

Claro and Altice desks after customs, fair prices, ten minutes. The airport wifi is free and slow.

  • How much to tip

Drivers: $5 to $10 for a standard transfer. Restaurants add 10% by law plus a tip on top, so check the bill before adding more.

Ride-hailing apps work in the city but pick-ups at the airport are restricted and unreliable, especially at night and with luggage.

Santo Domingo Airport transfer questions

How far is the Colonial Zone?
Thirty to forty minutes on the coast road, longer in evening traffic. Boca Chica is fifteen minutes.
Do you do Santo Domingo to Punta Cana?

Is there a fee to enter the country?
The tourist card is included in almost every airline ticket. The e-Ticket form is free and filled online before you fly.
Are the tolls included?
Yes. The Las Americas motorway has tolls and they are already in your price. No driver of ours asks for toll money.
