Santo Domingo: the oldest European city in the Americas, still working
Santo Domingo has the first cathedral, the first university and the first paved street in the Americas, and none of it is behind glass — the Zona Colonial is a neighborhood people live in, with motorbikes going down five-hundred-year-old streets. It is a capital of about three million, it is not a beach destination, and it is the part of the Dominican Republic that most visitors skip.
The Zona Colonial
A grid of about a dozen blocks, walkable, and a UNESCO site since 1990. Everything worth seeing on foot is inside it or on its edge.
Catedral Primada de América
Begun in 1512. The first cathedral built in the Americas, and still the parish church.
Alcázar de Colón
Diego Columbus’s palace above the river, built without a single nail.
Calle Las Damas
The first paved street in the Americas, named for the ladies of the viceregal court who walked it.
Plaza España and Calle El Conde
Where the city eats and walks in the evening. El Conde is the pedestrian spine of the Zona.
Fortaleza Ozama
The oldest fortress, with the Torre del Homenaje looking down the river.
Beyond the old city
The Malecón
Kilometers of seafront avenue, where the city takes its air. Not a swimming beach.
Los Tres Ojos
Flooded limestone caves inside a park on the eastern side of the city.
Faro a Colón
A vast concrete monument that throws a cross of light into the sky. Divisive, and unmistakably of its time.
Mercado Modelo
The city market, for amber, larimar and everything else.
Where to stay, and why it matters
Stay in the Zona Colonial. The old houses turned into small hotels are the best rooms in the city and put you inside the part you came for. Piantini and Naco are the modern business districts with the international chains — fine, and forty minutes from anything you wanted to see.
The airport is about 20 km east of the center. Traffic in Santo Domingo is heavy and unpredictable, so give the return journey considerably more time than the distance suggests.
How it fits a trip
Two nights in the Zona Colonial before or after a beach week changes what the Dominican Republic is in your head. Punta Cana is about three hours east, La Romana about two, Bayahibe about two. It is a genuine city with a genuine history, and it is the one part of this country an all-inclusive week tells you nothing about.
