Step by step

Arrival instructions, step by step

Puerto Vallarta has the most persistent timeshare hall in Mexico, and knowing that before you land is half the battle.

  1. 1. Immigration

Have your passport and hotel name ready. PVR is efficient; the slow window is late morning when the Canadian and US flights arrive together.

  2. 2. Baggage claim and customs

Collect your bags and press the customs button. Green and you walk on, red and your bag goes through the scanner.

  3. 3. The timeshare hall

This is the one to know about. After customs you walk through a corridor of desks in airline-style uniforms. They will tell you they are “airport information”, ask for your hotel and offer a free ride. They sell timeshare presentations. Some will say your driver is waiting at their booth. They are not.

  4. 4. Keep walking and go outside

Cross the arrivals hall and go out the doors. Nobody inside the building is your driver.

  5. 5. Cross to the pickup lane

The pickup lane is across a small road from the terminal, under the covered walkway. This is where authorized transport waits.

  6. 6. Find the sign

Your driver holds an eTransfers sign at the lane, not inside. Photo and plate are in MyTrip before you land.

Your name on the sign

Terminal A and Terminal B

PVR is one building with two concourses: A is domestic, B is the international satellite. Which one you use depends only on where your flight comes from.

Arrivals from both concourses come out through the same hall, so the walk to the pickup lane is the same either way.

At the airport

What you will find inside Puerto Vallarta International Airport

Free wifi

ATMs

In the arrivals hall and landside. Bank machines in town give a better rate.

Currency exchange

Airport rates are the worst in the region. Pay by card or withdraw at your destination.

VIP lounges

Paid at the door or with Priority Pass and similar.

No luggage storage

No lockers and no left-luggage desk. Plan for it if you have hours to kill.

Duty free

Not automatically cheaper. Compare before you buy, and check the liquid rules of your connection.

Restaurants and cafés

Most of it is past security. Do not linger before it.

Practical details

Practical details

  • Lost luggageIt belongs to your airline, not to the airport: claim it at your airline desk in the baggage hall before you leave.
  • AccessibilityWheelchair and boarding assistance are arranged by your airline. Ask for it when you book your flight, at least 48 hours ahead. Tell us when you book and the vehicle is ready for it, at no extra charge.
Safety first

Avoid the timeshare hall and pirate taxis

Puerto Vallarta is a safe city with an aggressive arrivals hall. The two are not the same thing.

The “airport information” desks

They are not airport staff and they are not information. They are timeshare sales, and the free ride costs you a ninety-minute presentation. Say no thanks and keep walking.

“Your driver is waiting over here”

Nobody inside the terminal is your driver. Ours wait outside, across the pickup lane, holding an eTransfers sign.

The pirates are outside because they cannot get in

To pick up inside PVR, GAP — the group that runs the airport — requires each vehicle’s registration, carrying the federal plates and the SICT permit, plus current insurance and several other requirements. Whoever cannot meet them waits outside the perimeter, with no passenger insurance and a price that changes halfway.

Verify photo and plate

Driver name, photo and plate are in MyTrip before you land. If they do not match, do not get in.

Never pay twice

The transfer is prepaid. No toll, no parking, no “terminal fee”. There are no toll booths on the way to town.

Skip the airport exchange desks

The worst rates in the bay. Withdraw pesos from a bank ATM in town or pay by card.

From our local team

Tips from our local team

Our own Puerto Vallarta team, answering what travellers ask.

eTransfers team at Puerto Vallarta AirportAt Puerto Vallarta Airport since 2014 Verified by our team at PVR
  • Which side of the bay?

South of the airport is Puerto Vallarta proper: the Malecon, the Romantic Zone, Los Muertos. North is Nayarit: Nuevo Vallarta, Bucerias, Punta Mita, Sayulita. They feel like different holidays.

  • Nayarit, but the same clock

Crossing the bridge puts you in another state, not another time zone: Bahia de Banderas — Nuevo Vallarta, Bucerias, Punta Mita, Sayulita — has used Jalisco time since 2010. The gap only shows up further north in Nayarit.

  • Pesos or dollars?

Dollars and Canadian dollars are taken all over the bay and you lose on every one. Pesos from a bank ATM.

  • How much to tip

Drivers: 50 to 100 pesos for a standard transfer. Restaurants: 10 to 15%. Tipping in pesos saves the staff a bad exchange.

  • When to come

November to April is dry and busy. June to October is hot, humid, green and much cheaper, with afternoon storms.

  • Whale season

Humpbacks are in Banderas Bay from December to March. You can see them from the hotel beaches on a good day.

The airport taxi counter sells by zone and quotes in pesos; the fare to Punta Mita or Sayulita is several times the one to town. A prepaid transfer is the same price whether you booked it in January or the night before.

Back to the airport

Your return to Puerto Vallarta Airport

PVR concentrates its departures in the morning, and the check-in lineups show it.

  • Domestic flightsPickup 2 hours before departure, plus the drive from your hotel.
  • International flightsPickup 3 hours before departure, plus drive time. Morning departures to the US and Canada leave in a block and the lineup is long.
  • From the north side, add driving timeFrom Punta Mita or Sayulita allow an hour on the road. The clock is the same as at the airport, so the drive is the only thing to add.

Puerto Vallarta Airport transfer questions

What is the hall of desks after customs?
Timeshare sales. They will look official, ask for your hotel name and offer a free ride or a free tour. Say no thanks and keep walking; your driver is outside, across the pickup lane.
Where exactly does my driver wait?
Outside the terminal, across the small road, at the covered pickup lane. Authorized transport cannot wait inside the building.
How far is Nuevo Vallarta? And Punta Mita?
Nuevo Vallarta is about 20 minutes, Bucerias 30, Punta Mita and Sayulita about an hour.
Is there a toll on the way?
No. Nobody should ask you for cash for tolls between the airport and any hotel in the bay.
Terminal A or B?
A is domestic, B is international. Both arrive into the same hall, so the walk out is the same.
Do you provide child seats?
Yes, free. Choose them at checkout and they are installed before you land.
