Step by step

Arrival instructions, step by step

A small, relaxed terminal with one arrivals exit. Fifteen minutes from the aircraft to your vehicle on a normal day.

  1. 1. The e-Ticket and immigration

The Dominican e-Ticket is free and filled online before you fly; have the QR ready. The tourist card is already included in almost every airline ticket.

  2. 2. Have your return ticket handy

Since 28 April 2023 the airline is required to check that every foreign passenger holds an onward or return ticket. Without one you can be refused entry, and the check happens at the counter, not on landing.

  3. 3. Flying in from Brazil or Venezuela? Yellow fever

The Dominican Republic requires an international vaccination certificate from anyone arriving from Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo, and from every passenger coming from Venezuela. It has to be at least ten days old. Confirm with your airline before you fly.

  4. 4. Baggage claim and customs

One hall, then customs. Checks are quick.

  5. 5. Porters and helpers

Porters expect a tip; two or three dollars is plenty. Keep your own cart if you would rather not.

  6. 6. Find the sign

Your driver waits outside the arrivals doors with an eTransfers sign. Photo and plate are in MyTrip before you land.

  7. 7. Fifteen minutes to Sosua

Sosua is ten to fifteen minutes, Cabarete twenty, Playa Dorada and Puerto Plata town twenty-five to thirty.

Your name on the sign

One terminal, ten gates

POP is a single terminal with a satellite concourse and a frontal concourse, ten gates in total. There is no terminal to get wrong.

The airport was rebuilt in 2013 and 2014 and can handle four wide-body aircraft at once, which is why the charter flights land here in blocks.

No lockers and no left-luggage desk. Plan for it if you have hours to kill.

What to watch for at Puerto Plata Airport

One of the easiest arrivals in the Caribbean. Two things are worth knowing.

Porters at the belt

Tipping is normal, but agree it is a tip and not a fee. Two or three dollars covers it.

Verify photo and plate

Driver name, photo and plate are in MyTrip before you land.

Never pay twice

The transfer is prepaid. No driver of ours asks for the fare on arrival.

Motorbike taxis

Motoconchos are everywhere on the north coast and are not the way to travel with luggage, at night, or with children.

Change money in town

Airport rates are poor. A bank ATM in Sosua or Puerto Plata gives the real one.

From our local team

Tips from our local team

Our own north coast team, answering what travellers ask.

eTransfers team at Puerto Plata AirportOn the north coast since 2018 Verified by our team at POP
  • Cabarete is a wind town

Kitesurfing and windsurfing conditions are best from December to August, with the wind building through the afternoon. Mornings are for flat water.

  • Sosua, Cabarete or Playa Dorada?

Sosua is the closest and the liveliest, Cabarete is the water-sports town, Playa Dorada is the resort enclave next to Puerto Plata.

  • Pesos, not dollars

The north coast takes dollars but pays you badly for them. A bank ATM in town is the right answer.

  • The cable car

Puerto Plata’s teleférico goes up Mount Isabel de Torres and is worth the morning. Go early, before the cloud comes in.

  • How much to tip

Drivers: US$5 to US$10 for a standard transfer. Restaurants add 10% by law plus a tip on top.

  • When to come

December to April is dry. The north coast gets more rain than the south all year, usually in short bursts.
