Marina Vallarta: the shortest transfer, and the weakest beach
Marina Vallarta was built in the eighties around a working marina, and it sits a few minutes from the airport terminal — the shortest transfer anywhere in Banderas Bay. Around the marina there is a boardwalk of restaurants, a golf course, a lighthouse and a row of hotels. The trade is the beach, which is the least good in the bay.
What it is genuinely good for
Proximity. A late arrival or an early departure from Puerto Vallarta airport is far less painful here than from the old town or from Nayarit, and it shows on the first and last day of a trip. It is also flat, planned and walkable in a way the hilly old town is not, which matters with a stroller or limited mobility.
The marina boardwalk in the evening is genuinely pleasant: boats on one side, restaurants on the other, the lighthouse at the end, and none of the crowds of the malecón.
And the honest drawback
Playa Marina is narrow, partly rocky in places, and it faces into the marina channel. Compared with the long flat sand of Nuevo Vallarta or Playa de los Muertos in town, it is the weakest beach in the bay. If beach time is the whole point of the trip, stay somewhere else and visit the marina for dinner.
What is around it
The malecón and old town
About 15 minutes south by bus or taxi. Close enough to go in most evenings.
Nuevo Vallarta
A few minutes north, across the river and the state line.
The golf course
Right there, one of the older courses in the bay.
Boat trips
Some tours and charters leave from the marina itself rather than from Los Muertos pier — worth checking which, because it saves a transfer.
Who should choose it
It suits
Short trips, awkward flight times, golfers, families who want flat ground, and anyone treating Vallarta as a base rather than a beach week.
It does not suit
A beach holiday. The sand here is the compromise you are making.
