Arrival instructions, step by step

A single small terminal. From the aircraft door to your vehicle is usually under fifteen minutes.

1. Immigration
Only on international flights. Cozumel is small and the lineup rarely takes more than fifteen minutes, except when two US flights land together at midday.
2. Baggage claim and customs
One belt, then the customs button: green and you walk on, red and your bag goes through the scanner.
3. Out to the front of the terminal
The exit leads straight to the ground transport area. There is no long corridor and no hall of sales counters.
4. Find the sign
Your driver waits with an eTransfers sign. Photo and plate are in MyTrip before you land.
5. Ten minutes to San Miguel
The airport is on the north edge of town. San Miguel and the ferry pier are ten minutes away; the southern hotels are fifteen to twenty-five.

Cozumel has a single terminal with eight gates, six international and two domestic. There is no terminal to get wrong.

What to watch for on Cozumel

One of the calmest arrivals in Mexico. The two things worth knowing are about taxis and about the ferry.

The taxi union runs the island

Cozumel has no ride-hailing apps: the taxi union has an exclusive and enforces it. Fares from the airport are fixed but high, and they go up after dark.

The pirates are outside because they cannot get in

To pick up inside the airport, ASUR requires each vehicle’s registration — carrying the federal plates and the SICT permit — current insurance and several other requirements. Whoever cannot meet them stays outside the perimeter, which is where they approach you.

If you are arriving by ferry instead

Most visitors come from Playa del Carmen by ferry, not by plane. We drive you to the Playa pier and pick you up at the Cozumel pier; tell us which one you need.

Diving and flying

Do not book a dive for the morning of your flight home. The standard rule is 18 hours between your last dive and take-off, and Cozumel is a diving island.

Plane or ferry?
Most travellers fly into Cancun and take the ferry from Playa del Carmen: thirty to forty-five minutes, roughly hourly. Flying direct into CZM saves the ferry but costs more.
Pesos or dollars?
Dollars are accepted everywhere on Cozumel and you lose on every one of them. Pesos from a bank ATM in town.
Where the diving is
Palancar, Columbia and Santa Rosa are all on the protected southwest side. Boats leave from the hotel piers and from downtown, not from the airport side.
No golf carts here, that is Isla Mujeres
People mix up the two islands all the time. Cozumel is too big and too busy for a golf cart and nobody rents them; what you rent here is a car or a scooter. Hertz, MEX and America have counters at the airport, and Emily and HTL are in town.
Is a rental worth it?
For one day driving the island loop, yes: it is a single good road and the east coast is empty. For the airport run with luggage it is not, and the counter lineup eats the first hour of your trip.
Cruise ship days
On days with three or four ships in port San Miguel is packed from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The east coast beaches stay empty.
