Fixed prices per vehicle

Where are you going from Tulum Airport?

Fixed rates per vehicle, not per person. Tulum Airport is closer to the beach hotels than Cancun, and the drive is shorter too.

Arrival instructions, step by step

A small, modern terminal: arrivals are on the lower level and the walk out is short. You will be in the vehicle 20 to 30 minutes after landing.

  1. 1. Immigration

Upper level for departures, lower level for arrivals. Immigration at TQO is quick because the terminal handles a fraction of Cancun’s traffic. Have your passport and hotel name ready.

  2. 2. Baggage claim and customs

Collect your bags and press the customs button: green light and you walk through, red light and your bag goes through the scanner. Two minutes either way.

  3. 3. Straight out, no timeshare hall

This is the big difference with Cancun. TQO has no hall of counters selling “free transportation”. You clear customs and you are at the exit.

  4. 4. Find the sign

Outside the arrivals doors your driver holds an eTransfers sign. Photo and plate are in MyTrip before you land.

  5. 5. If you are taking the Tren Maya instead

An electric shuttle links the terminal with the Tulum Airport station. Useful for Merida or Valladolid; for the hotel zone the train does not get you to the door and a transfer does.

  6. 6. Twenty minutes to town

The airport highway is new. Twenty minutes to Tulum town, about forty to the beach hotels along the coastal road, which is the slow part.

Your name on the sign

One terminal, two levels

TQO has a single 70,000 m² passenger terminal with 13 gates. Departures upstairs, arrivals downstairs. There is no terminal to get wrong.

Arrivals, baggage claim and customs are on the lower level; you exit straight to the ground transport lane.

The airport opened in December 2023 and has room for 5.5 million passengers a year; it handled 1.25 million in 2025, so it never feels crowded.

ATMs

In the arrivals hall and landside. Bank machines in town give a better rate.

Currency exchange

Airport rates are the worst in the region. Pay by card or withdraw at your destination.

No lockers and no left-luggage desk. Plan for it if you have hours to kill.

Duty free

Not automatically cheaper. Compare before you buy, and check the liquid rules of your connection.

What to watch for at Tulum Airport

Far calmer than Cancun, but the road from the airport is where the care goes.

Taxi cartel pricing in Tulum

Tulum’s local taxi union sets its own fares and they are high, especially from the airport and along the beach road at night. A prepaid transfer avoids the negotiation entirely.

The pirates are outside because they cannot get in

Picking up inside the airport takes each vehicle’s registration — carrying the federal plates and the SICT permit — current insurance and several other requirements set by the airport administration. Anyone offering you a ride without that is operating outside the perimeter.

The coastal road at night

The Tulum beach road is narrow, unlit and busy with cyclists. It is not the place to be driving a rental for the first time after a long flight.

Verify photo and plate

Driver name, photo and plate are in MyTrip before you land. If they do not match, do not get in; message IAN.

Never pay twice

The transfer is prepaid. No driver of ours asks for the fare, tolls or a “terminal fee” on arrival.

Cash in Tulum town

Many beach-road businesses are card-only or cash-only with no middle ground, and ATM fees on the beach road are steep. Withdraw in town, not at the airport.

Tips from our team on the Riviera Maya

What travelers ask us about flying into the new airport instead of Cancun.

  • TQO or CUN for Tulum?

If the fare is similar, TQO wins: it is 20 km from town against 118 km from Cancun, which is about an hour and a half of your holiday each way.

  • Pesos or dollars?

Tulum quotes a lot in dollars and euros, and you always lose on the conversion. Pay in pesos where you can.

  • The Tren Maya

The station is next to the terminal and it is genuinely useful for Merida, Valladolid and Chichen Itza. For your hotel it is not: the beach zone is 20 km from the station.

  • Sargassum season

May to September on the open coast. Cenotes, Laguna Kaan Luum and the lagoon side are unaffected and are half the reason to be here.

  • Getting around once you are there

The beach road is best on a bike. Book a transfer for the airport legs and rent a bike for the rest; a car is a parking problem in Tulum.

  • When to come

December to April is dry and busy. September and October are quiet, green and cheap, with a real chance of rain.

The ADO bus goes to Tulum town, not to the beach road, so you still need a taxi at the other end. That second leg is where the Tulum taxi fares bite.

Your return to Tulum Airport

Short drive, small terminal: you need less buffer here than at Cancun, but the beach road is unpredictable.

Tulum Airport transfer questions

Is Tulum Airport actually in Tulum?
It is 20 km southwest of Tulum town, near Felipe Carrillo Puerto. That is a 20 minute drive to town and about 40 to the beach hotels, against nearly two hours from Cancun.
TQO or TUY? Which code is right?
TQO. TUY is the old naval airstrip. The commercial airport that opened in December 2023 is TQO, and that is the code on your boarding pass.
Which airlines fly here?
Aeroméxico, Viva and Volaris domestically, plus American, Delta, United, JetBlue, Spirit, Air Canada and WestJet from the United States and Canada. Around twenty cities have direct flights.
Can I get to Cancun or Playa del Carmen from here?
Yes. Playa del Carmen is about an hour and Cancun about two. Both are normal routes for us.
Is there a Tren Maya station?
Yes, right next to the terminal, connected by an electric shuttle. It is useful for Merida and Valladolid, less so for your hotel.
Where does my driver wait?
Outside the arrivals doors on the lower level, holding an eTransfers sign. There is one terminal, so there is nothing to get wrong.
