What you’ll do
What to expect
Beneath the jungle of the Riviera Maya, just minutes from Playa del Carmen, there's a river you can't see from above. Rio Secreto is a nature reserve where you gear up with a wetsuit, a life jacket and a helmet with a headlamp, then head into a cave to follow that hidden river, sometimes on foot and sometimes floating in clear, fresh water.
The route runs for roughly one kilometer. As you move along, your lamp picks out columns, stalactites hanging from the ceiling and stalagmites rising from the floor, shapes the water has carved drop by drop over a geological story measured in millions of years. Inside the cave it's almost completely quiet, which makes every formation feel even more striking.
The ancient Maya saw caves and cenotes as gateways to Xibalba, their underworld. Your specialized guide shares the story of the place and how the cave took shape, and since groups are capped at 10 people, there's room to ask questions, pause and take it all in at an easy pace.
No experience is needed and you don't have to know how to swim, since your wetsuit and vest do the floating for you. When you come out, lockers and towels are ready so you can change, and a buffet of regional food with soft drinks rounds out the visit.
It's a great pick for families with kids 4 and up, couples, and anyone looking for something beyond a beach day. This option doesn't include transportation, so you'll get to the reserve on your own. Choose your time slot and discover the Caribbean that flows underground.
