Three days in Playa del Carmen, hour by hour
Three days is the right length for Playa del Carmen: one for the town, one for Cozumel, one for whatever is south. What follows is a real schedule rather than a list — the times are the point, because almost everything that goes wrong here is a timing problem rather than a choice problem.
Day one: the town, which takes less time than you think
Breakfast inland, not on Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue). Anywhere on Avenida 10 or further back — you are looking for a place with people in it at nine in the morning. Then walk south along Quinta to the ferry pier, which takes about twenty minutes and shows you the whole commercial spine of the town in one go.
Beach before eleven. The sun between eleven and three is not a European sun and there is limited shade on the central beach; go early, come out, and use the middle of the day for something under a roof — lunch, the supermarket, a nap, the interior of the town.
Late afternoon, walk north. Mamitas, then keep going if you have the energy: the streets thin out, the beach gets quieter, and Punta Esmeralda at the top is where the local families are at six o’clock. Back down for dinner around eight, one street inland, and Quinta Avenida afterwards when the heat has gone and the shops are lit.
Day two: Cozumel, and the ferry times that matter
Take an early crossing — the first ones are quieter and you want the island, not the boat. Thirty-five minutes to San Miguel. Buy the return at the same time and note the last sailing; that is the only fixed point in the day.
Hire a car or a scooter at the pier. This is the decision that makes or breaks the day: taxis on Cozumel are not metered and a full day of them costs more than a rental, and the island is about sixty kilometers around the south. With wheels you get the reefs in the morning, San Gervasio or Punta Sur in the middle, and the wild east coast in the afternoon.

Day three: pick exactly one thing south
This is where the itinerary usually collapses, because everything south of Playa is genuinely appealing and people try to combine two of them. Do not. Pick one.
Cenotes
The shortest of the options: twenty to thirty minutes down the highway by colectivo, two cenotes in a morning if they are next to each other, back for lunch. Cash, towel, no sunscreen. The best-value day of the three.
Tulum
An hour each way. The ruins at opening, then either the town or the beach road — not both. Back mid-afternoon if you leave early. The Tulum guide explains the zones.
A park
Xcaret, Xplor or Xel-Há. Twelve hours door to door with a pickup before eight, and the whole day gone. Worth it if you want that kind of day; a mistake if you thought it was an afternoon.
Nothing
Entirely defensible. A second day in the town, with the morning at Playacar’s beach, is a better holiday than a badly-planned excursion.
If it rains
Tropical rain here is heavy and usually short, so the first answer is to wait an hour. If it settles in, the cinema at one of the centers, a long lunch, and the shops are the honest options — Playa does not have museums to fall back on.
What does not work is switching plans blindly: a cenote is fine in rain, a park is miserable, and the ferry may not run. Check the specific thing rather than assuming inland is drier.
Three things to get right in advance
Stay in the center, or the whole itinerary above needs a taxi in front of it. Book the Cozumel day for the middle of the trip, not the last day, so there is somewhere to move it to if the port closes. And leave departure day alone — Playa del Carmen is about an hour from Cancún Airport and the road is reliable, but only if you have not put a ferry or a park in front of it.
