Best time to visit Tulum: month by month, and when not to go
The best time to visit Tulum is December through April: it is the driest stretch, with average highs of 29–31 °C (85–89 °F) and, in most years, little sargassum on the beach. The quietest good window is late November to mid-December, and mid-January through March outside spring break and Easter. The worst time is September and October — the rainiest months of the year, the peak of hurricane season, and still hot. Sargassum usually peaks from May to August.

Two things the table hides. First, the rain here is tropical: heavy, short and usually over by lunch, so a rainy month still has plenty of sunny hours. Second, the heat is the variable people underestimate. From April to September the middle of the day at the ruins — clifftop, pale stone, almost no shade — is genuinely hard work.
The worst time to visit Tulum
September and October. They combine the heaviest rain of the year (about 170–180 mm a month and 11–13 rainy days), the statistical peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, and highs that still sit around 31–32 °C. Prices and crowds are at their lowest, which is the whole appeal — and a fair trade if your dates and bookings are flexible.
If sargassum is what you want to avoid above all, the riskiest stretch is May through August, peaking in June and July in a typical year. In a heavy year, some beaches get brown piles of seaweed on the sand and a murky shoreline, while a beach a few kilometers away can be clear the same morning.
When to rent a villa and avoid crowds and sargassum
Late November to mid-December is the sweet spot: the rains are easing, sargassum is usually at its lowest, and the Christmas crowds have not arrived yet. The second-best window is mid-January to early March, once the New Year rush has gone and before spring break and Easter.
Sargassum: what you can and cannot predict
The season is predictable; the exact beach on the exact day is not. The University of South Florida’s monthly outlook tracks the Atlantic sargassum belt, which is usually smallest from December to February and largest in June or July. Its August 2026 bulletin reported that amounts were declining in every region and expected them to keep falling until about November.
For the week you travel, the useful sources are local: Quintana Roo’s sargassum monitoring and the hotel itself, which knows the state of its own sand. A message to the hotel three days before you fly is worth more than any seasonal average.
The ruins run on their own clock
INAH lists the Tulum archaeological site as open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with last admission at 3:30 p.m. That last-admission time catches people out constantly, because the tour buses arrive mid-morning and the line is its own delay.
Go at opening. Not only for the light, but because by eleven the stone is radiating heat and the shade on the whole site amounts to a few trees near the entrance. Bring water, a hat and shoes for uneven ground.
What hurricane season actually means for a booking
The Atlantic season runs June 1 to November 30. That is a statistical window, not a forecast, and most days inside it are ordinary Caribbean days. What it changes is not whether you should go but how you should book.
Read the cancellation terms on the room, the flight, the tour and the ground transfer separately — they are four different contracts and they will not match. Then check the National Hurricane Center outlook about a week out, and again two days before. During the stay, follow civil protection and your hotel, not social media.
Where you stay changes which months suit you
A hotel on the beach road puts you on the sand and a long way from a supermarket, a pharmacy or the highway. Tulum town is the reverse: easy road access, real restaurants, everyday prices, and a ride to the sea every day. In the dry months the beach road wins; in the wet months the town looks better, because there is somewhere to go when it rains.

Clean beach, cool weather, low price or empty. Pick one. You will not get all four.
Block out the crowded weeks
Christmas to New Year and Easter week, unless those are your only vacation days.
Book flexible from June to November
Pay a little more for terms you can change. It is cheap insurance.
Leave one day loose
One day with nothing booked absorbs rain, a closed road or a rough sea without costing you anything.
