How to read a Playa del Carmen address
Playa del Carmen is a grid, and once you can read the grid you can find anything in it without a map. Streets running inland from the sea are Calles and they are numbered. Streets running parallel to the sea are Avenidas. The numbering restarts at Avenida Juárez, and that restart is where every visitor gets lost — there are two Calle 2s, and they are twenty blocks apart.
The grid in one paragraph
Calles run perpendicular to the beach and count outwards from Avenida Juárez, which divides the town. North of Juárez the Calles are even: 2, 4, 6, up to 46 and beyond. South of Juárez they are odd: 1 Sur, 3 Sur, and so on. Avenidas run parallel to the sea and count inland: Quinta (5th) is the pedestrian one nearest the beach, then 10, 15, 20, 25 and so on.
What is on which blocks
Juárez to Calle 10
The oldest part. The ferry pier, the bus terminal, the church, and the busiest stretch of Quinta.
Calle 10 to Calle 14
The nightlife blocks. Bars, clubs, and noise until very late. Book here only if you want that.
Calle 14 to Calle 38
The best balance: walkable to everything, quieter at night, and where most of the good mid-range hotels are.
North of Calle 38 to Coco Beach
Residential, calmer, still walkable to the north end of Quinta. Better value.
South of Juárez, towards Playacar
Quieter, close to the ferry, and then the gated development begins.
West of Avenida 30
Where people live. Cheaper food, supermarkets, and no tourism.
Checking an address before you book
A hotel listing that says "Playa del Carmen" and nothing else is worth two minutes of checking. Find the Calle and the Avenida. If it gives a kilometer marker on Highway 307 instead, it is not in the town at all — it is on the highway, and everything will be a taxi.
Anything above Avenida 30 is a walk from the beach that gets real in the middle of the day. Anything past Calle 46 is far enough north that Quinta stops being a stroll.
Moving around inside the grid
The town is walkable end to end in about forty minutes along Quinta, and everything worth walking to is inside that. Taxis are negotiated, not metered, and are only worth it to Playacar, Mayakoba or the highway. Colectivos to Tulum and Puerto Morelos leave from Calle 2 between Avenidas 15 and 20.
