Playa del Carmen: the town you can walk, and the resorts you cannot
Playa del Carmen is the one place on this coast where you can land, drop the bags and not arrange transport again until the flight home — but only if you sleep in the right part of it. The center is a grid you can cross on foot, with the beach at one end and the ferry at the other. Half the hotels sold as "Playa del Carmen" are nowhere near it.
The center is small, and that is the whole point
Quinta Avenida — La Quinta — runs parallel to the sea for about forty blocks, pedestrian the whole way. The beach is one block east of it, the ferry pier is at Calle 1, and the bus terminal is right there too. From a hotel between Calle 10 and Calle 38 you can reach all three on foot, which is why the center costs more and is worth it.
It is also loud. The blocks between Calle 10 and Calle 14 are where the bars are; if you want the walkability without the noise, book north of Calle 20 or south towards Playacar and accept a ten-minute walk.
Four places all called Playa del Carmen
The center
Everything on foot. Best value if you are not planning to rent a car, worst value if you wanted quiet.
Playacar
A gated development just south, with the big all-inclusives, a golf course and its own calm beach. Twenty minutes’ walk to Quinta Avenida along the sand, or a short taxi. Phase 1 is close to town; Phase 2 is not.
North of Calle 38 and Coco Beach
Quieter, more residential, still walkable to the north end of Fifth. Where people stay on a second visit.
Mayakoba and the highway resorts
Fifteen to twenty minutes out, behind their own gates, with internal roads longer than you expect. Superb hotels, and you will not be strolling anywhere.
The ferry changes what the town is for
Cozumel is thirty to forty-five minutes away and the boats run through the day from the pier at Calle 1. That makes Playa del Carmen the only base on this coast from which the island is a day trip rather than a move. It also makes the pier area busy and full of people selling you things.
Buy at the ferry company window, not from someone on the street, and check the last boat back before you plan dinner over there. The crossing is rough often enough to matter if anyone in the party gets seasick.
Eating, by street rather than by list
Quinta Avenida
Convenient, international, and priced for people who are on holiday. Fine for a drink and a view of the street.
Calle 30 and west of it
Where people who live here eat. Cheaper, better, and mostly in Spanish.
Calle 38 north
Small independent places, quieter, a mix of both.
The street food around the bus terminal at night is genuinely good and genuinely cheap. Order what has a posted price and what has a line.
What it costs, and where it leaks
Playa del Carmen is cheaper than Cancun’s strip if you sleep in the center and eat off Quinta Avenida, and more expensive than it if you do neither. Lock the room and the two airport legs first — 55 km each way from Cancun Airport — then add meals, the ferry if you are doing Cozumel, and one paid activity per day.
The leak is taxis. Short hops add up fast here, and they are negotiated rather than metered. If you find yourself taking four a day, you booked in the wrong part of town.
Things worth knowing before you arrive
Getting here
It is 55 km from Cancun Airport. ADO runs from the terminals to the bus station in the center; a booked car goes to the door.
Colectivos
The shared vans on Calle 2 run up and down the highway to Tulum and Puerto Morelos for very little. Light luggage only, and know where you are getting off.
The beach
Public up to the tide line, including in front of the resorts. The center’s beach is narrower than the photos suggest at high tide.
Sargassum
Roughly April to August, variable by year. The town posts nothing official, so look at recent photos.
