From CUN to Tulum town, beach road, or hotel entrance
It is 118 km from Cancun Airport to Tulum, which is over two hours of your first day. But the distance is not the hard part — the hard part is that Tulum town, the beach road, the developments out in the jungle and the ruins are four different destinations that all say “Tulum” on the booking, and the beach road is the slow one.
Make sure you are landing where you think
CUN is Cancun. TQO is Tulum International, which opened in 2023 and is much closer to Tulum itself. This article is about arriving at CUN. If your ticket says TQO, it is a completely different and much shorter road journey, and you should not be planning around 118 km.
Say which Tulum
The town
Streets, terminals, services, and the cheaper places to stay. Everything works and everything is close together.
The beach road
Its own access, its own traffic, and hotels that need specific instructions. This is where most of the photos come from and where most of the delays happen.
A development
Plenty of properties put Tulum in the name while sitting well outside the town grid, down a road that is not always paved.
The archaeological zone
A visitor site with INAH opening hours and a last admission, not a place to sleep. People do book transfers to it thinking it is a neighborhood.
Getting there from CUN
Bus
Check the current departure, which terminal it ends at, the luggage terms and the last mile. A stop in town does not finish a beach-road journey, and taxis from town to the beach road are their own negotiation.
Private transfer
Booked against the operating flight, the party, the luggage and the exact property. On a 118 km run with children, this is usually what we would do ourselves.
Airport taxi
ASUR lists taxis at Terminals 2 and 3. Confirm destination, total, vehicle and payment at the authorised point.
Rental car
Contract, insurance, deposit, fuel, parking, road use and return. Parking on the beach road is genuinely difficult, so check the hotel has it.
Compare the whole arrival
Where it actually stops
A terminal, a town address, or the hotel door. Find out which before you pay, not after.
Capacity
Every passenger, every bag, the stroller, the mobility equipment.
What still runs at your hour
It has to be operating after immigration and the belt, and on this route the evening options thin out fast.
The way back
Hotel, terminal, flight, and an honest margin for the road. From the beach road, add more than you think.

The ruins close earlier than the day does
INAH currently publishes 08:00 to 17:00 with last admission at 15:30. Arriving at four in the afternoon after a long transfer means standing outside the fence. Check the hours again for your date, along with admission and any separate access charge.
