Getting around the Cancun Hotel Zone: bus, taxi, walking and the airport
The Cancun Hotel Zone is one road — Kukulcan Boulevard — 22 km long, shaped like a 7 from downtown (km 0) to Punta Nizuc (km 22). The cheapest way along it is the R-1 or R-2 bus: 12 to 15 pesos on the conventional buses and 18 pesos on the new MOBI buses, which started charging on September 29, 2026. Taxis do not use meters, so agree on the price before you get in. From the airport, the Hotel Zone is 15 to 30 minutes by car.
The Hotel Zone by kilometer marker
Everyone here navigates by the km marker on Kukulcan and by which side of the road you are on: the Caribbean side or the lagoon side. Save the full name of your hotel, its km and its side, and do the same for wherever you are going. That is what a driver, a bus stop or a map app actually needs.

The bus: R-1 and R-2
Buses marked R-1 and R-2 “Hoteles” run the length of Kukulcan all day. The R-1 comes from downtown along Avenida Tulum and covers the whole strip; the R-2 comes from residential neighborhoods and runs the Hotel Zone as far as Playa Delfines. They stop at the marked stops along the boulevard, and on many stretches you simply flag one down.

Taxis inside the Hotel Zone
Cancun taxis do not use meters. They charge by zone under a state rate system, and the price for a tourist is often higher than for a local. We could not find a current official rate card published online that we can cite, so ask your hotel’s front desk what a ride to your destination should cost, then agree on the total with the driver before you get in. Agreeing afterward is not a negotiation.
Uber and DiDi work in the city and in the Hotel Zone. They cannot pick you up at the airport, though: it is federal land, and only taxis and buses with a federal SICT permit can carry passengers to and from the terminals.
From the airport to the Hotel Zone

The south end of the Hotel Zone (km 22) is about 13 km from the airport and Punta Cancun (km 9) about 25 km. Taxi counter prices change without notice; ADO fares vary by date and departure.
The Hotel Zone is closer to the airport at its south end, so a hotel at km 20 is a quick run and one at Punta Cancun takes longer. For anything after dark, with kids, or with more than two bags, a booked ride that is waiting at the exit is the easiest option.
Walking works inside a segment, not across the strip
Punta Cancun (km 9) to La Isla (km 12.5) is about 3.5 km — 45 minutes on foot in the heat. That is fine at sunset with a sidewalk and a plan, and miserable at noon with a beach bag. Before you walk it, check the distance, whether the sidewalk runs the whole way, where you can cross, shade, lighting after dark, and where the hotel gate really is: a map pin sits on the building, and the driveway can be 300 meters long.
For the beach, use the public access points (the ones at Langosta, Tortugas, Caracol, Chac Mool, Marlin and Delfines are the easiest) and know how you are getting back. Walking through a hotel lobby to reach the sand is not a right, and some properties are strict about it.
Know when you have left the Hotel Zone
Downtown Cancun, Puerto Juarez, Puerto Cancun, Costa Mujeres and the airport are all separate trips off the strip, and the bus that serves one does not always serve the other. The relevant guides: Cancun, Puerto Juarez and the ferries and the airport route.
Agree on the late pickup before you go out
Pick a lit spot where a car can legally stop, save the address and a contact number, and agree on the pickup before the night starts. The one thing not to do is start walking an unfamiliar stretch of boulevard at two in the morning because the map says it is only a kilometer.
