How to get from Cancun to Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is 55 km south of Cancun Airport, 45–60 minutes by car on Highway 307. You have four real options: a private transfer booked ahead, which goes to your hotel door and charges per vehicle; the airport taxi, about US$70–85 per car; the ADO bus, about 216–270 pesos per person from the airport; or a colectivo van from downtown Cancun. Which one wins depends on how many of you there are, how much luggage you have and where exactly you are staying.

Private transfer: the door-to-door option
A private transfer is a car or van booked for your group only. The driver tracks your flight, meets you in the arrivals hall and drives straight to your hotel. It is priced per vehicle, so it gets cheaper per person the more of you there are, and it is the easiest choice with kids, car seats, lots of luggage or a resort outside downtown.

Airport taxi: fixed price at the counter
Taxis at Cancun Airport are sold at a counter inside Terminals 2 and 3 at a fixed price per zone. There is no meter and no haggling: you pay, get a ticket and hand it to the dispatcher outside. The airport operator, ASUR, lists the taxi service but does not publish the fares.
As a reference, private companies list the Cancun Airport to Playa del Carmen ride at around 1,500 pesos (about US$70–85) per car in 2026. A van for a larger group costs roughly double. Confirm the total, the currency and the vehicle size before you pay.
ADO bus: cheapest from the airport
ADO runs from Terminals 2, 3 and 4 to downtown Playa del Carmen, with up to 30 departures a day between 7:50 a.m. and 10:35 p.m. Tickets cost about 216–270 pesos per person and include up to 25 kg of checked luggage. Buy at the ADO counter after customs.
It ends at the downtown ADO station, a short walk from Fifth Avenue. That works if your hotel is in central Playa. If it is in Playacar, at Mayakoba or at a highway resort, add a taxi from the station.
From downtown Cancun or the Hotel Zone
From downtown Cancun, ADO leaves the station at Avenida Tulum and Uxmal every 15 to 30 minutes, at roughly US$6–17 depending on time and class. Colectivo vans leave from the same area, stop anywhere along Highway 307 and are paid in cash. They are good if you travel light, but they are not an airport service.
From the Hotel Zone, first take the R1 or R2 bus to downtown, or book a transfer from your hotel. Street taxis from the Hotel Zone to Playa have been reported at up to 2,200 pesos per ride, so agree on the price before you get in.
Playa del Carmen to Cancun and the airport
The trip back works the same way in reverse: ADO from the downtown station to the airport terminals, a taxi arranged through your hotel, or a pre-booked transfer that picks you up at your door. Count back from your flight: three hours before an international departure, plus 45–60 minutes of highway and a traffic margin.
Do not put a Cozumel ferry crossing or a long excursion on the same day as your flight. It is the single mistake we see most often on this route.
Where you are actually going in Playa del Carmen
Central Playa is walkable around Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue). Plenty of hotels sold as Playa del Carmen are not in it: Playacar is south of downtown, and Mayakoba and several resorts sit on the highway with their own gates. Check which one yours is before you choose the bus.
