What is El Cielo, and how does the Jimny tour work?
El Cielo is one of the main draws of Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, along with its coral reefs and the C-53 shipwreck. It is shallow water over white sand where you can see starfish from the surface. The only way there is by boat, with CONANP-licensed operators.
The land part is a drive around Cozumel in a Jimny, Suzuki's small off-roader, with a guide, along the island's roads. Vehicles are shared by up to 4 passengers, and the driver must be 18 or older with a valid license.
There are several versions: some leave from Playa del Carmen and include the round-trip ferry, others start on Cozumel. The boat may be a catamaran or a speedboat, and some add El Cielito, another snorkel spot nearby. Check with the operator what yours includes.

How to get to El Cielo Cozumel
From Cancun or the Riviera Maya, head first to the Playa del Carmen ferry terminal (Calle 1 Sur). The Xcaret ferry leaves every hour from 8:30 a.m. and takes about 45 minutes; Winjet runs from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. If your tour includes the ferry, the operator will tell you which terminal and what time to show up.
To reach Cozumel on time you need a morning ferry. A private transfer drops you at the Playa del Carmen terminal in time for the ferry and waits for you on the way back, when you are tired and sandy, with no depending on taxis.
