Thanksgiving in Orlando: the busiest week of the fall
Thanksgiving is the biggest family holiday in the United States, and in 2026 it falls on Thursday, November 26. In Orlando it isn’t one day, it’s a whole week: schools are out, the parks are packed, Disney and Universal already have Christmas up, the outlets open early for Black Friday the next morning, and the Sunday flight home lands on one of the airport’s heaviest days of the year. Here’s what to know before you buy tickets, book dinner or pick your flight times.
What it is and when it falls
Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November. It’s a federal holiday: banks, government offices and nearly every school close, and a lot of families take Friday off too. That makes a four-day weekend that moves more people than any other date on the American calendar.
If you’re traveling from Canada, the UK or Latin America, keep in mind that this is the US holiday. Canadian Thanksgiving is in October, and in Cancun or Punta Cana the Thursday is an ordinary day. In Orlando, though, everything revolves around it, and what may be just another vacation week for you is the trip of the year for millions of American families.
| Day | Date in 2026 | What happens in Orlando |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday and Sunday before | November 21 and 22 | Families start arriving; the airport is already busy. |
| Tuesday and Wednesday | November 24 and 25 | The parks fill up; Wednesday is a heavy day for arriving flights. |
| Thursday | November 26 | Thanksgiving: turkey dinner, the Macy’s parade on TV in the morning, parks open. |
| Friday | November 27 | Black Friday at the stores and outlets; EPCOT’s holiday festival opens. |
| Sunday | November 29 | Everyone flies home: the airport’s busiest day of the whole period. |
Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday in November; Black Friday is the day after.
The parks that week
Disney and Universal are open on Thanksgiving Day, and the whole week ranks among the most crowded of the year. This isn’t the time to wing it: date-based tickets, park reservations and dining reservations sell out faster than in an ordinary November week.
The upside is that by then the holiday season is already running. You get the decorations, the winter parades and the special events without the summer heat and without the lines of the week between Christmas and New Year’s.
Magic Kingdom: Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party
The separately ticketed Christmas night party runs on select nights from November 8 to December 22, 2026. The nights of Thanksgiving week were among the first to sell out, so if you want it, buy as soon as your dates are set and check availability on the Walt Disney World site.
EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays
Opens the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 27, and runs through December 30, 2026. Seasonal food booths, choirs and the Candlelight Processional at the America Gardens Theatre. It’s included with park admission.
Universal Studios Florida: the holiday parade with Macy’s
Universal’s Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s runs nightly from November 14, 2026, to January 3, 2027, with the same giant balloons the rest of the country watches in New York. It’s included with regular park admission, with some blockout dates for certain passes.
If you’re bringing kids, plan a rest day between parks. With crowds like these, everyone gets tired sooner, and a pool day at the hotel saves the rest of the trip better than one more park.
The parade: the one on TV and the one in Orlando
The Thanksgiving parade everyone knows is the Macy’s parade in New York. It airs Thursday morning, and at a lot of Orlando hotels you’ll catch it on the lobby screen over breakfast. It’s as much a part of the day as the turkey.
Orlando’s version is at Universal Studios Florida. The park’s holiday parade brings Macy’s balloons, floats and Santa at the end, and it runs every night from mid-November on. If you want to see the balloons in person without flying to New York, this is where you do it, on a regular park ticket.
Where to have turkey dinner
If you’ve never done Thanksgiving, dinner is the whole point. At home it’s eaten early, mid-afternoon, and the table almost always carries the same dishes. These are what you’ll find on a restaurant’s Thanksgiving menu:
| Dish | What it is |
|---|---|
| Turkey | Roast turkey, the centerpiece, carved into slices of white and dark meat. |
| Stuffing | Bread stuffing with herbs, celery and onion; sometimes sausage. |
| Gravy | A thick sauce made from the turkey drippings. It goes on nearly everything. |
| Cranberry sauce | Sweet-tart cranberry relish. |
| Mashed potatoes | Almost always with plenty of butter. |
| Green bean casserole | Green beans baked in a creamy sauce with fried onions on top. |
| Sweet potatoes | Baked or mashed, sometimes topped with toasted marshmallows. |
| Pumpkin pie | Spiced pumpkin custard pie. The required dessert. |
In the parks and at the big hotels, many restaurants run a special Thanksgiving menu or a turkey buffet that day. They fill up, and not by a little. At Walt Disney World, dining reservations open up to 60 days ahead: for Thursday, November 26, that was September 27. If you don’t have one yet, check the Disney app several times a day; cancellations do show up, especially in the final week.
Inside the parks
The easiest option if you’re in a park that day, and the hardest to get. Ask for an early slot: Thanksgiving dinner in the US is a mid-afternoon meal.
Hotel restaurants
The large hotels in Lake Buena Vista, on International Drive and around Universal usually set up a Thanksgiving buffet. Ask yours when you book the room.
Disney Springs and International Drive
The two areas with the most restaurants outside the parks. Plenty of cuisines, plenty of people and, again, book ahead.
Black Friday at the outlets
The day after Thanksgiving is Black Friday, the start of holiday shopping, and in Orlando that means outlets. There are two big ones from the same chain, Premium Outlets, and it helps to know which one is near you:
Orlando International Premium Outlets
At the north end of International Drive, a few minutes from the hotels around Universal and the convention center.
Orlando Vineland Premium Outlets
On Vineland Avenue, on the Lake Buena Vista side, next to the Disney-area hotels.
Hours change every year and are announced in November. In both 2024 and 2025 the two outlets opened at 5 a.m. on Friday, but that isn’t a rule: check the 2026 hours on the Premium Outlets site the week before.
The price tag doesn’t include tax
In Orange County, where both outlets are, sales tax is 6.5%, added at the register.
Parking fills up early
By midmorning, circling for a spot can take longer than the drive from your hotel. Arriving with a driver skips that part.
Leave room in your suitcase
Or pack an empty bag inside another one. Most people’s problem isn’t what they spend, it’s getting it all home.
The airport: the Sunday to avoid
For Orlando International Airport (MCO), Thanksgiving is one of the heaviest stretches of the year. For the 2025 period, November 21 through December 2, the airport authority projected about 1.9 million passengers, and the Sunday after Thanksgiving was the busiest day of all, with more than 177,000 people expected in a single day.
In 2026 that Sunday is November 29. If you can fly Saturday or Monday, do it. If you can’t, leave for the airport with more cushion than you normally would: security lines, bag drop and the traffic into the terminals all stretch out at the same time.
Check your terminal before you leave
MCO has two separate buildings: Terminals A and B share the north side, and Terminal C stands on its own on the south side. You can’t walk between them.
On arrival, head down to Level 1
Ground transportation is on Level 1 at every terminal. That’s where our driver meets you with an eTransfers sign.
We track your flight number
If your plane is early or late, we move the pickup. You don’t pay extra because your flight came in late on the Wednesday before the holiday.
Getting around that week
Nothing in Orlando is walkable from one area to the next, and during Thanksgiving week the roads around the parks are as busy as they get. These are the drive times from the airport in normal traffic:
| From MCO airport to… | Time without heavy traffic |
|---|---|
| Walt Disney World (17 miles / 27 km) | about 30 min |
| Lake Buena Vista | about 25 min |
| Universal and International Drive | about 20 min |
| Port Canaveral, cruise terminals (43 miles / 70 km) | about 1 hr |
At rush hour and on the heavy days of the holiday weekend, add a cushion.
Leaving the park takes longer than getting there
At closing, tens of thousands of people head out at once. Set your pickup in advance at a specific spot, not at the turnstiles.
If you’re cruising after the holiday
Plenty of cruises leave Port Canaveral over Thanksgiving weekend. From the airport or your Orlando hotel it’s about an hour, so book the transfer around your boarding time, not the ship’s departure.
Big groups and families
Thanksgiving is a grandparents, cousins and strollers kind of trip. One van for everyone costs less and runs smoother than three rideshares.
Weather and packing
Late November is one of the best times to be in Orlando: the sticky summer heat is gone and afternoon thunderstorms are rare. Mornings and evenings can be cool, especially at a nighttime parade or in a park line at rope drop, so bring a sweatshirt or a light jacket even if you’re in short sleeves by noon.
The Atlantic hurricane season officially ends on November 30. By the end of the month the risk is low, but it’s worth checking the forecast a few days before you fly, as with any fall trip to Florida.
Layers, not a coat
Something light for morning and night, and your usual clothes for the day.
Closed, comfortable shoes
A park day is a lot of miles on foot, and so is Black Friday.
Something a little dressier
If you booked Thanksgiving dinner at a hotel restaurant, the room tends to be dressier than a regular park day.
A Thanksgiving week that actually works
There’s no single plan, but this order avoids the usual mistakes: arriving on the busiest day, doing two parks back to back with kids, and flying out Sunday at noon.
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| Monday 23 | Arrive a day ahead of the rush. Transfer to the hotel and an easy afternoon. |
| Tuesday 24 | First park, from opening. |
| Wednesday 25 | Easy day: the pool, Disney Springs or some unhurried shopping before Black Friday. |
| Thursday 26 | The Macy’s parade on TV at breakfast, a park in the morning and a mid-afternoon turkey dinner you booked ahead. |
| Friday 27 | Black Friday early at the outlet, or EPCOT on the day its holiday festival opens. |
| Saturday 28 | Last park, or Universal’s nighttime parade. |
| Monday 30 | Fly home the day after the airport’s busiest Sunday. |
If your trip has to end on Sunday the 29th, take an early or an evening flight and avoid midday, when hotel checkouts and most departures pile up at the same time.
Your arrival, sorted before you fly
Thanksgiving week is not the time to haggle over a ride on the curb. We meet you on Level 1 of your terminal with an eTransfers sign, track your flight and take you straight to your hotel in Lake Buena Vista, on International Drive, around Universal or to the cruise port, at a price per vehicle that’s locked in when you book.
If you’re traveling as a big family, tell us how many of you there are and how many bags you’re bringing, and we’ll assign the right vehicle. For the trip back, we’ll work out your pickup time with you, with the busiest Sunday of the year in mind.
