Puerto Morelos: the reef is 500 meters away, and that changes everything
Twenty kilometers south of Cancun Airport there is a village with a square, a leaning lighthouse and a fishing fleet, and it has somehow stayed that way while everything around it was built. The reason to come is in the water: the barrier reef runs about five hundred meters offshore, close enough that the sea inside it behaves like a swimming pool and the snorkelling is the best on this coast.
What the reef does to the water
Most of this coast faces open Caribbean. Puerto Morelos does not, because the reef breaks the swell before it arrives. The result is flat, shallow, clear water along the whole village beach — the one place between Cancun and Tulum where you can put a small child in the sea without watching the flag all morning. It also means less sargassum than the open stretches, though not none.
The reef is a national marine park. Trips go out with local co-operatives, in small boats, with a guide, and there are rules about sunscreen, touching and where you may anchor. Those rules are the reason the reef is still worth seeing.
What is actually here
The square and the malecón
The whole village is about six blocks. Restaurants around the square, the beach at the end of it, and the leaning lighthouse — knocked off vertical by a hurricane in 1967 and left there.
The fishing pier
Where the snorkel boats leave from. Morning trips are calmer and clearer than afternoon ones.
The Sunday market
Local, small, and the reason to be here at the weekend.
The jungle side
Across Highway 307 sits the botanical garden, the crocodile zoo and the road to Ruta de los Cenotes.
Ruta de los Cenotes
The road inland from Puerto Morelos runs past a string of cenotes — Siete Bocas, Verde Lucero, Boca del Puma and others — many of them run by ejido communities rather than companies. They are less polished than the big-name cenotes further south and considerably cheaper, and some of the road is rough. This is the best reason to have a car here.
Who it suits, and who it does not
It suits
Families with small children, snorkellers, anyone who wants a village rather than a strip, and second-time visitors who found Playa del Carmen too busy.
It does not suit
Anyone who wants nightlife, shopping, or a long list of restaurants. Six blocks is six blocks.
Careful with
The resorts marketed as Puerto Morelos that are actually several kilometers up or down the highway, with no village within walking distance. Check the street address.
Practicalities
It is 20 km from Cancun Airport, the shortest transfer of any town on this coast, and about 35 km from Playa del Carmen. Colectivos on the highway connect both, but the village itself is two kilometers off the highway, so the bus leaves you at the junction — with luggage, that matters.
Cash goes further than card here. The village has cash machines but few, and the smaller restaurants and cenotes are cash only.
