Costa Mujeres: the newest strip, and the most isolated
Everything at Costa Mujeres was built in the last decade or so, which is why the resorts are enormous, the rooms are current and the beach in front of them is wide. It sits 32 km north of Cancun Airport, past Puerto Juárez, on a stretch of coast that faces Isla Mujeres — so the water is calm. It is also the strip with the least outside it, and that is the trade you are making.
Where it is, and why the sea behaves
North of Cancun, past the ferry terminals at Puerto Juárez, the coast turns and looks east-northeast with Isla Mujeres sitting offshore. That shelter is what gives Costa Mujeres and neighbouring Playa Mujeres their flat, shallow water — closer to Playa Norte than to the open Cancun strip.
The transfer is 32 km from the airport, which is about twice the Hotel Zone. Costa Mujeres is around 30 minutes from downtown Cancun and about 45 from the middle of the Hotel Zone, with traffic through the city in between.
What the hotels are like
Big, new, almost all all-inclusive, and several of them among the largest on this coast. Because they were designed together, the beach is continuous and wide, and because they are new, the rooms and the pools are in better condition than equivalents on the Cancun strip.
The upside
Space, current facilities, calm swimmable sea, fewer crowds, and beaches that suffer less sargassum than the open coast.
The downside
There is no village. No shops, no independent restaurants, no walking anywhere. Everything is the resort or a car.
Playa Mujeres next door
The same coast slightly closer in at 30 km, with a marina and a golf course, and the same essential trade.
Leaving the property
Plan it before you book. The Isla Mujeres ferry at Puerto Juárez is close — perhaps fifteen minutes — which makes the island the obvious day out and a genuinely good one from here. Downtown Cancun for food is half an hour. Everything on the Riviera Maya is that half hour plus the drive south.
Taxis exist but are expensive from here and negotiated. If you intend to go out more than twice, price a rental car or tours with hotel pickup before you assume taxis are the answer.
Who it suits
It suits
Families wanting calm water, couples who plan to stay in, anyone who prioritises a new room and a wide beach over having a town nearby.
It does not suit
A first trip to Mexico where you want to see the country, or anyone who dislikes being dependent on one property for every meal.
