What you see at Tulum, Coba and the cenotes
Tulum is the walled Mayan city on a cliff above the Caribbean, 80 miles (128 km) south of Cancun. It is small and takes one to two hours. It sits inside Jaguar Park (Parque del Jaguar), and the foreign-visitor fee already covers park access.
Coba lies inland, 29 miles (47 km) northwest of Tulum, among lagoons and jungle. The site covers about 27 square miles (70 km²) and is crossed by sacbes, raised Mayan stone roads; the longest runs 62 miles (100 km) to Yaxuna. Its Nohoch Mul pyramid can be climbed again: INAH opens it from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., in groups of up to 15, with up to 15 minutes at the top.
The cenote is usually one along the road between Tulum and Coba or on the highway back toward Playa del Carmen. It is the way to cool off after walking both sites in the sun.
Tulum wins on the ocean view; Coba on the jungle and the pyramid climb. With half a day, pick one. For both, start early: Tulum stops letting visitors in at 3:30 p.m.

How to get to Tulum and Coba
Tulum is 80 miles (128 km) south of Cancun on Highway 307, about 2 hours from the Hotel Zone and around 1 hour from Playa del Carmen. From Tulum to Coba it is 29 miles (47 km) on Highway 109, about 45 minutes. ADO buses run to Tulum and a few to Coba, with limited departures, so doing both sites in one day without a car is hard.
