Playa Paraiso: make sure you know which one you booked
There are two Playa Paraisos on this coast and they are eighty kilometers apart. One is a resort area on the Riviera Maya, a few minutes north of Playa del Carmen, with large all-inclusives behind a gate. The other is the wide public beach just south of the Tulum ruins that appears in every photograph of Tulum. Booking a transfer to the wrong one is a real and regular mistake here.
The two of them
Playa Paraíso, Riviera Maya
A resort enclave between Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos, roughly 45 to 50 km from Cancun Airport. Large all-inclusives, their own beach, a golf course nearby, and nothing outside the gate.
Playa Paraíso, Tulum
A public beach a couple of kilometers south of the archaeological site, about 118 km from Cancun Airport. Beach clubs at one end, free access, and the postcard view back towards the ruins.
The Riviera Maya resort area
This is a strip of large properties on a good stretch of sand, close enough to Playa del Carmen that its restaurants and the Cozumel ferry are fifteen minutes away. It is a straightforward all-inclusive base: the beach is wide, the water is typical of this coast, and everything you do outside is a vehicle.
Because there is no village, the calculation is the same as everywhere on this coast: if you will go out more than twice, price tours with hotel pickup or a car rather than assuming taxis.
The Tulum beach
Wide, pale, and looking back at the cliff with the ruins on it. There is free public access and there are beach clubs at the northern end with loungers and a minimum spend. It is the most photographed beach in Tulum and, on a good day, it earns it.
It faces open Caribbean, so sargassum hits it between roughly April and August, variably. Check recent photographs rather than a brochure image, because a brochure image was taken on a good day.
