Playa Mujeres: a marina, a golf course and a very short list
Playa Mujeres is the older half of the resort development north of Cancun, 30 km from the airport and just short of Costa Mujeres. It has a working marina and a Greg Norman golf course, which is most of the reason people choose it over its neighbour, and it shares the same calm water and the same complete absence of anything outside the gate.
What distinguishes it from Costa Mujeres
They are adjacent stretches of the same sheltered coast, and from the beach they are hard to tell apart. The differences are on land: Playa Mujeres has the marina and the golf, is marginally closer to the city at 30 km against 32, and its resorts are a few years older and somewhat smaller. Costa Mujeres is newer and bigger.
If you golf or you want a boat, Playa Mujeres. If you want the newest room, Costa Mujeres. For everything else the decision is the specific hotel, not the strip.
The water
Sheltered by Isla Mujeres offshore, so flat and shallow along most of it, and less exposed to sargassum than the open coast south of Cancun. It is swimmable on days when Playa Delfines is flying red, which for a family is the whole argument for being up here.
The marina is the actual feature
Fishing charters, catamarans and the crossing to Isla Mujeres all leave from here, and the island is about twenty minutes away by boat. Being able to walk to a boat rather than drive to a pier is a small thing that changes a week.
The Puerto Juárez passenger ferry is also close by road, which is the cheaper way to the island if you are not chartering.
The honest limitation
There is no town. No shops, no independent restaurants, nothing you can walk to. Downtown Cancun is around half an hour and the Hotel Zone about forty-five minutes, both through city traffic. Every meal outside your hotel is a planned trip and a negotiated taxi.
Book transfers and tours with hotel pickup rather than assuming you will improvise. This is not a strip where you flag something down.
