What is the Cancun Clear Boat?

It is a ride in a boat whose hull is transparent from bow to stern, so you see the sea floor from your seat, with no mask or snorkel. In Cancun the tour is called "Cancun Colors" and it is run by Envatours, a Mexican company that also operates clear boats in Isla Mujeres and Los Cabos.

The route starts in Nichupte Lagoon, a reserve of more than 3,000 hectares, heads out to the Caribbean and ends over a reef. The operator mentions fish, turtles, conchs, stingrays and starfish; what you see depends on the day and how clear the water is.

It is not a snorkeling tour: nobody gets in the water. It is not a classic glass bottom boat either, which only has a window in the floor; here the whole hull is clear. That makes it a good fit for small kids, older travelers and non-swimmers.

Getting there

How to get to Cancun Clear Boat

The meeting point is at km 3.5 of Kukulcan Boulevard, in the first stretch of the Hotel Zone, close to downtown Cancun. From hotels between km 9 and km 20 it is a 10 to 25 minute drive depending on traffic, and about an hour from Playa del Carmen.

Transportation is not included. City buses run along the boulevard, but with kids or older travelers it is easier to have a private transfer drop you at the dock for your departure time and pick you up when you are done.
