San José del Cabo is the half of Los Cabos that was already there
San José del Cabo was a mission town long before anyone built a resort down the coast, and it still behaves like one. There is a square with laurel trees, a church at the top of it, streets of low colonial buildings turned into galleries, and an estuary full of birds where the river meets the sea. It is 10 km from the airport — the shortest transfer in Los Cabos — and it is where people who have been to Cabo before choose to stay.
The old town
The center is a handful of walkable blocks around Plaza Mijares. The Misión de San José del Cabo sits at the head of it, and the streets running off — Obregón, Morelos, Álvaro Obregón — are the Gallery District, where old houses have become galleries, courtyard restaurants and small hotels.
On Thursday evenings in season the galleries open late for the Art Walk: doors open, wine poured, people in the street. It is the best evening in Los Cabos and it costs nothing.
The food is the other reason
San José has the better restaurants of the two towns, and by some distance. Courtyard places in the old town, a farm-to-table scene inland around the Animas Altas valley, and a Saturday organic market in season. It is also cheaper than Cabo San Lucas for the same meal.
The beach, and a warning
The beach in front of San José — Playa Hotelera — is long, empty and beautiful, and it is not for swimming. It faces open sea with a heavy shore break and there is no protection. People drown on this stretch. Walk on it, do not go in.
For swimming, Playa Palmilla is about ten minutes west: a protected bay, shallow, calm, with a boat launch and a good beach for children. Chileno and Santa María are further along the corridor.
The estuary
Where the San José river reaches the sea there is a freshwater lagoon behind the beach — an oasis in a desert peninsula, and a stop on a migratory route. Hundreds of bird species pass through. You can walk it in an hour from the edge of town, early, and see almost nobody.
Who should stay here
It suits
Anyone who wants a town rather than a strip, people who care about food, second-time visitors, and anybody who wants the shortest transfer from the airport.
It does not suit
Nightlife, sport fishing at dawn, or wanting to walk to a swimmable beach. All three are at the other end.
