Orlando: the city is not where the parks are
Walt Disney World does not have an Orlando address — it sits southwest of the city, largely in Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, and it is roughly the size of a small city itself. Universal is much closer in. Downtown Orlando is a separate place with lakes and neighborhoods that most visitors never see. Getting the geography right before you book is the difference between fifteen minutes to the gate and an hour.
Where things actually are
Walt Disney World
Southwest of the city. Four theme parks, two water parks and dozens of hotels across an enormous property. Moving between its own parks can take as long as getting there.
Universal Orlando
Much closer to the city and to International Drive. Compact by comparison: you can walk between its parks and CityWalk.
International Drive
The hotel and entertainment strip between the two, with the convention center, SeaWorld and the outlet malls.
Downtown Orlando
The actual city: Lake Eola, Thornton Park, Mills 50, and a food scene that has nothing to do with the parks.
Winter Park
North of downtown, leafy and expensive, with the Morse Museum of Tiffany glass and a boat tour through the lake canals.
Where to stay depends on which parks
If the trip is Disney, staying on Disney property buys transport and early access and costs more. If it is Universal, staying at its hotels buys walking distance and, at some of them, a skip-the-line pass that is worth real money. If it is both, International Drive sits between them and is the compromise.
Nothing here is walkable between areas. A car, ride apps or the park shuttles are not optional, and the distances are bigger than they look on a map.
How many days, honestly
A theme park day is ten to twelve hours on your feet in Florida heat, and two in a row is the point at which children stop enjoying it. Most families do better with a rest or pool day between park days than with one more park.
Book park reservations and dining where the system requires it, well in advance — some restaurants open bookings months ahead, and arriving without them narrows the day considerably.
Beyond the parks
Kennedy Space Center
An hour east on the coast. A full day, and a genuinely different one.
The Atlantic beaches
Cocoa Beach and New Smyrna, about an hour east.
The Gulf
Clearwater and the Tampa side, about two hours west, with calmer water and better sand.
Springs
Wekiwa and the other freshwater springs north of the city — clear, cold and full of manatees in winter.
Practicalities
Orlando International publishes different pickup levels and areas by terminal, so read the instructions for yours rather than following the crowd. Summer is hot, humid and thunderstorms arrive most afternoons — they pass, but the parks close rides during lightning. Hurricane season runs June to November.
