International Drive: the compromise address, and a good one
International Drive is a strip roughly 25 kilometers long running between Universal and the edge of Disney, lined with hotels, restaurants, the convention center, two outlet malls and a great deal of neon. Nobody comes to Orlando for I-Drive. Plenty of people stay on it, because it is the one address that is reasonably close to everything and has a trolley running along it all day.
The strip has three parts, and they are not the same
North I-Drive
Closest to Universal, with the Premium Outlets at Vineland and a denser cluster of restaurants. The best section if Universal is the priority.
The middle, around the convention center
The Orange County Convention Center, the ICON Park wheel, the big conference hotels. Busy when there is a show on, quiet when there is not, and prices swing accordingly.
South I-Drive
Closer to the Disney side and to SeaWorld, generally quieter and cheaper.
The trolley is the reason to stay here
The I-Ride Trolley runs the length of the strip on two routes, all day, for a small fare or a multi-day pass. It is the only part of the Orlando tourist area with genuinely usable public transport, and it means you can eat somewhere different every night without a car or a ride app.
It does not go to the parks. Park shuttles, ride apps or a car do that.
What is actually on the strip
ICON Park
The observation wheel, an aquarium and a wax museum in one complex. Priced per attraction.
The outlets
Two large outlet malls at either end, and they are the reason a lot of visitors bring a second suitcase.
Restaurants
More per kilometer than anywhere else in Orlando, and the range runs from chains to very good.
SeaWorld and Aquatica
At the southern end, walkable from some hotels.
Who should book here
It suits
Trips doing both Universal and Disney, anyone who wants to eat off-property, and travelers watching the budget — the same standard of room costs noticeably less than on park property.
It does not suit
A Disney-only trip with small children, where staying on property and using its transport is worth the premium.
