Cabo San Lucas: everything happens within a kilometer of the marina
Cabo San Lucas is compact in a way the rest of Los Cabos is not. The marina is the center of it, Médano beach curves away from one side, the town sits behind, and the Arch is twenty minutes offshore by panga. You can walk all of that. It is also the noisy end — sport fishing boats at dawn, cruise tenders by ten, and bars that run late.
The marina is the town
Everything radiates from the horseshoe of the marina: the fishing fleet, the boat tours, the restaurants along the boardwalk, and the hotels behind. If you are here without a car, book within a few blocks of it and you will not need one.
Cruise ships tender passengers in here, which on a ship day changes the marina, the prices and the line for a panga. Look up the calendar if you want a quiet morning.
Playa Médano is the swimmable one
It runs east from the marina, inside the bay, sheltered by the headland — which is why it is the only long beach in town you can swim at. It is also completely commercialised: loungers with a minimum spend, jet skis, and a steady line of vendors. That is the deal, and for most people it is worth it.
Walk towards the far eastern end for more space. Never swim from the Pacific-facing beaches west of the marina, whatever they look like.
The Arch, Lover’s Beach and the water taxi
A panga from the marina takes twenty minutes to Land’s End: the Arch, the sea lion colony on the rocks, and Lover’s Beach in the gap between the two seas. Negotiate the price and agree the pickup time before you get in, because the return is the part people get stuck on.
On the Sea of Cortez side you can swim. Walk fifty meters across to Divorce Beach on the Pacific side and you cannot — that water kills people every year, and there is no lifeguard and no phone signal.
Fishing, whales and diving
Sport fishing
What built this town. Marlin, dorado, tuna, from charters that leave the marina before dawn. Agree in advance what happens to the catch.
Whale watching
Roughly December to April, from the same boats, and the animals come close in.
Diving
The underwater sandfalls at the tip, and Cabo Pulmo — a properly recovered reef — a couple of hours up the east cape.
Practicalities
The airport is 33 km away at San José, which is the longest transfer of the three Los Cabos zones — allow for it both ways. In town, taxis are plentiful and negotiated; between zones they are expensive enough that a car starts to make sense.
Cabo is priced in dollars in a lot of places and is one of the more expensive destinations in Mexico. San José, half an hour away, is noticeably cheaper for dinner.
