Why take a Cancun catamaran trip, and when to choose the ferry
A catamaran day sounds like freedom and is the opposite: a pier transfer, a check-in, several hours on a boat with sixty other people, maybe a snorkel stop, a short window ashore, and a fixed return. That is a genuinely good day if it is what you wanted. If what you wanted was Isla Mujeres at your own pace, take the ferry and save most of the money.
Who it suits, and who should take the ferry
It works for people who are comfortable with boat movement, do not mind a shared schedule, want the sailing and the music to be part of the day, and are happy with sun for several hours. The open bar is usually why the boat is loud on the way back, and whether that is a feature or a problem is the whole decision.
The ferry from Puerto Juárez costs a fraction, takes twenty minutes and puts you on the island with the whole day to yourself. If the island is the point rather than the boat, that is the better purchase and nobody selling catamarans will tell you so.
What to establish before paying
The pier
Which one, how check-in works, whether transport there is included and where you park.
The boat
Maximum passengers, seating, shade, whether there is a toilet, and how you board. Sixty people on a boat rated for eighty is a different day from thirty.
The snorkelling
The named site, the equipment, whether a guide goes in, and what happens when the sea cancels it.
The island
How many minutes ashore, where it lands, and the meeting time. Often it is ninety minutes, which is lunch and nothing else.
Food and drink
Menu, water, what the open bar covers, allergies and which extras are charged.
The captain decides the route, not the itinerary
Wind, swell or a port direction can move the snorkelling stop or cancel the departure entirely, and on this coast that happens regularly between November and February. Follow the life-jacket and water-entry instructions — the crew is not being cautious for fun, and the channel between the mainland and Isla Mujeres has current.
Close the day properly
Arrange the ride from the pier back to your hotel in advance, especially where alcohol is included, and do not drive. Compare what you actually want against the Isla Mujeres guide and the Puerto Juárez guide before booking — the two versions of this day cost very different amounts.
