Saona Island, and where it sits among the best beaches in the Dominican Republic
Saona is a 110 km² island inside Cotubanamá National Park, off the southeast tip of the Dominican Republic. The boats leave from Bayahibe, about an hour to an hour and a half by road from the Punta Cana resorts. As of September 2026, operators publish full-day tours from about 70 to 90 USD per adult, and premium versions up to about 160 USD. Expect 8 to 10 hours door to door.
What Saona actually is

Saona is the largest island in Cotubanamá National Park. Mano Juan, a fishing village of about 500 people, is the only inhabited part. The natural pool everyone photographs is a shallow sandbar off Palmilla beach, knee- to waist-deep. The island is also the country’s most important turtle-nesting site.
It is a protected area with a resident community, not a beach club. The Ministry of Environment counts more than a million visitors a year. Boat access, visitor areas, waste rules and the sea all shape the day, and the operator controls few of them.
What a Saona tour costs
| Type of tour | Published price per adult | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Standard group tour from Punta Cana | about 69–90 USD | 8–10 hours |
| Child (usually 2–12) | about 45 USD | same day |
| Premium or small group | about 120–160 USD | 8–9 hours |
Prices published by local tour operators, checked in September 2026. They usually include hotel pickup, lunch and drinks. A national park wristband is mandatory; many tours include it, so ask.
The price difference is mostly the boat and the group size. Ask how many people ride in the bus and in the boat, whether it is speedboat out and catamaran back, and which stops are included.
The day from Punta Cana, step by step
Hotel to Bayahibe
About an hour to an hour and a half, plus stops at other hotels first. Confirm the pickup gate and how many stops there are.
The pier
The operator should name the boat, the guide and the return time, and hand out life jackets before anyone boards.
The crossing
Speedboat out and catamaran back is the common format, or the reverse. A full catamaran in a swell feels very different from a speedboat.
The stops
Usually the natural pool, a beach, and sometimes Mano Juan. Confirm which ones are in your itinerary.
The return
Boat, then the same road back. It ends at five on paper; you reach the hotel later.
Pack sunscreen that is reef-safe, a dry bag, a towel, dry clothes for the ride home and some cash for extras. Do not handle the sea stars in the natural pool: it kills them.
The best beaches in the Dominican Republic
Saona is one of the country’s best beach days, but not the only one. These are the beaches the Dominican Ministry of Tourism and the travel press rank highest, by coast.
| Beach | Coast and province | Why it stands out |
|---|---|---|
| Bahía de las Águilas | Southwest, Pedernales | Called the country’s most beautiful beach by the tourism ministry. About 8 km of empty sand in Jaragua National Park, no hotels or shops. |
| Playa Rincón | Northeast, Samaná | About 5 km long, ranked by Condé Nast Traveler among the ten most beautiful in the world. Calm at one end, waves at the other. |
| Playa Frontón | Northeast, Samaná | Under a 90 m cliff, reached by boat or a long hike from Las Galeras. |
| Saona Island | Southeast, La Altagracia / La Romana | White sand, palm groves and the natural pool, inside a national park. |
| Isla Catalina | Southeast, La Romana | Calm water, no development, and good snorkeling and diving on the Catalina Wall. |
| Playa Dominicus | Southeast, Bayahibe | Shallow water, a reef close to shore and no undertow. Blue Flag certified. |
| Juanillo | East, Cap Cana | Often ranked among the best in the country. Powdery sand, and wind for kiteboarding. |
| Bávaro | East, Punta Cana | The longest resort beach, with several Blue Flag stretches. |
| Macao | East, Punta Cana | A public beach with waves and year-round surf lessons. |
| Cayo Levantado | Northeast, Samaná Bay | A small island with a public side, reached by boat taxi from Samaná. |
| Cabarete | North, Puerto Plata | The country’s kitesurfing hub, with wind about 250–300 days a year. |

Which side of the Dominican Republic has the best beaches?
It depends on what you want from the water.
The east (Punta Cana, Bávaro, Cap Cana)
The most beach in one place: more than 50 km of white sand. Easiest to reach, with the country’s busiest airport. Macao and Uvero Alto get more waves.
The southeast (La Romana, Bayahibe)
The calmest water, on the Caribbean side. Dominicus has no undertow, and Saona and Catalina are right offshore. Best for small children and snorkeling.
The northeast (Samaná)
The most dramatic scenery: Rincón, Frontón and Cayo Levantado. Humpback whales visit from January to March. Further from everything.
The north (Puerto Plata, Cabarete, Sosúa)
Atlantic, with more wind and surf. Best for kitesurfing and for Sosúa’s calm snorkeling bay.
The southwest (Pedernales)
Bahía de las Águilas, the wildest and emptiest. A long trip, with no services on the beach.
Where to stay if Saona is the point
Bayahibe is the real gateway, and staying there removes most of the road from the day. A Punta Cana hotel adds the drive but may suit the rest of the vacation better. Compare Punta Cana and La Romana, and keep Saona off your arrival day: read the Punta Cana Airport guide first.
