Uber in Cancun: where it works, and where it does not

Uber works in Cancun the way it works in most Mexican cities — for getting around town. It does not work at the airport, and that is not a glitch or a bad night: Mexican airports are federal ground, and the federal transport authority has said plainly that app platforms have no permit to pick up or drop off there. If your plan for the arrival was "we will just call an Uber", it needs changing before you fly.

The airport is the part that does not work

On 30 October 2025 the Secretaría de Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes, through its federal road transport office, stated that services contracted through digital platforms hold no authorisation to operate at the country’s airports, Cancun included, and that only taxis and buses with a federal permit may carry passengers to and from the terminals.

Uber holds a court suspension from the amparo it filed over the National Guard operations at airports. That suspension does not authorise it to work there. It only requires that the enforcement be lawful and applied without discrimination — which is a very different thing, and the authority said so in the same notice.

What is authorised from the terminal

Authorised airport taxi

Regulated tariff by zone, bought at the counter inside the terminal. The price is per vehicle, not per person.

Booked private transfer

A vehicle assigned to your booking with a federal permit, waiting inside with your name. Price closed before you fly.

ADO bus

Cheap and reliable to Playa del Carmen and downtown Cancun, and it leaves you at a station — the last stretch to the hotel is still yours to solve.

Rental car

Worth it only when the plan uses the car most days.

The full arrival, terminal by terminal, is in the Cancun Airport guide, and the closed price for your zone is in the Hotel Zone price list.

In the city it is another matter

Once you are in Cancun, Uber is a normal option: Hotel Zone to downtown, dinner on Yaxchilan, a run to the supermarket. It is often cheaper than a street taxi, which here negotiates rather than meters, and you have the trip on record.

Two local details. Coverage thins out as you leave the city — Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Tulum are their own markets with their own waits. And there is a long-standing conflict with the taxi union in this state, which is why some drivers will ask you to sit in front.

Thirty seconds before you get in

Name, photo, plate, car color and ride type all have to match the screen. If one of them does not, it is not your trip. Keep the chat and the payment inside the app: the moment either moves outside it, so does everything the app can do for you if something goes wrong.

Traveler questions

Can I take an Uber from Cancun Airport?
No. The federal transport authority has stated that platform services have no permit to operate at Mexican airports, and that only taxis and buses with a federal permit may carry passengers to and from the terminals. Use an authorised taxi, a booked transfer or ADO.
But the app lets me request one. Why?
The app publishes the city; the permit is a separate matter and it is federal. A request can be accepted and then canceled, or end with the driver asking you to walk outside the airport perimeter.
Does Uber work in Cancun city?
Yes, normally, and it is usually cheaper than a street taxi. Coverage gets thinner outside the city.
Is Uber cheaper than an airport taxi?
It is not a comparison you get to make, because one of the two is not authorised there. Between an authorised taxi and a booked transfer, the transfer is normally cheaper for three or more people and always closed before you fly.
What should I check before getting in?
Driver name, photo, plate, car color, ride type and the destination on screen. All five, every time.
