Beach clubs sold as Cancun options but spread across four zones
Search for a Cancun beach club and you will be shown four different places. Some are on the strip. Some are on Isla Mujeres and need a ferry. Mamita’s and Zenzi are in Playa del Carmen, which is another city an hour south. Maroma and Xpu-Ha are further south still. Nothing in the listing tells you this, and it is the reason people end up paying for a day pass they cannot reach.
Four geographies wearing the same label
The Cancun Hotel Zone
The only ones you can reach by bus from a Cancun hotel. Find the kilometer on Kukulcan and which side of the boulevard, because there are few places to turn across.
Isla Mujeres
Add the pier, the ferry, getting around the island and — the part people forget — the last boat back. Garrafón and the Playa Norte clubs are all on the island.
Playa del Carmen
Mamita’s and Zenzi are in a different city, about 55 km south. A lovely day out, and not a Cancun beach club.
The Riviera Maya coast
Maroma and Xpu-Ha are road journeys with their own pickup arrangements. Maroma in particular is not somewhere you improvise a taxi back from.
What a day pass actually buys
Two very different models get called the same thing. One is an entry fee that includes a lounger and often a towel and a locker. The other is a minimum spend: you pay nothing to get in, but you commit to spending a figure on food and drink, and the lounger is conditional on it. Ask which one it is before you go.
Entry or minimum spend
And if it is a minimum, whether the lounger is included in it or charged separately.
What the credit covers
Food, drink, both, and whether tax and service come out of it or are added afterwards.
Facilities
Towel, locker, shower, pool, and whether beach access is actually part of the pass.
Age rules
Several are adults only and several change policy at weekends.
Cancellation
What happens if the weather turns, which on this coast it does.
The reservation does not control the sea
You can pay for a lounger and find a red flag, a rough sea or a meter of sargassum on the sand, and none of those is refundable. Read the flags and do what the staff say, especially on the long eastern stretch of the Hotel Zone, which faces open Caribbean and gets real surf.
For sargassum, Quintana Roo’s environment authority publishes a status map — the semáforo del sargazo — which is the only official source there is. Check it the morning of, not the week before, because it moves.
Plan the way back by zone
From the Hotel Zone, the bus runs late. From Isla Mujeres, the last ferry decides your day and there is no bridge. From Playa del Carmen or Maroma, you need the return arranged before you leave, because getting a taxi from a beach club at six in the evening is a negotiation you will lose.
Compare the real travel in Cancun, Isla Mujeres and Playa del Carmen before you book anything.
