The City Cancun is closed, and nobody has said when it comes back

For years this was the room people meant when they said they were going out in Cancún — the Friday night, the six-thousand-capacity hall, the spring break headline act. It closed on 17 May 2025 for remodelling and, as of this update, the operator’s own ticket page still says temporarily closed with no date. That is a real gap in the strip, and it changes how you plan a night here.

What the operator actually says

The sales page run through Mandala Tickets carries a single line: the venue is temporarily closed, getting ready for something, and news will come via social media. There is no date, no presale, no waiting list. The Quintana Roo tourism board records the 17 May 2025 closure for remodelling and has not logged a reopening since.

So if you have been sent a link, an offer or a package that includes The City for a date this year, that is a reseller selling something the venue is not currently operating. Ask for the venue’s own confirmation before you pay for it.

Why the closure is noticeable

The City was not just another club on Kukulcán. Its own material described capacity for up to six thousand people, and it functioned as the concert hall of the Hotel Zone as much as a nightclub — the room where a touring act played when a touring act came to Cancún. During spring break it absorbed a volume of people that nothing else on the strip is set up to hold.

With it shut, the Punta Cancún night is more spread out and more expensive per head. The remaining venues are smaller, which means lines form earlier, tables sell out sooner and admission for a group of eight takes more arranging than it used to.

How to plan a night at Punta Cancún now

The district is still the district. It sits around kilometer 9.5 of Boulevard Kukulcán, and the venues in it are close enough together to walk between, which is the single most useful fact about it. Coco Bongo and Mandala both appear in the current tourism guide and both run as ticketed shows rather than as turn-up-and-pay clubs.

Buy from the venue

Whatever you go to, buy through the venue’s own channel. The street sellers on the boulevard work on commission and the ticket they hand you may not be what you think it is.

Read what open bar means

It varies enormously between venues and between tiers inside the same venue. House spirits only, a time limit, a table minimum — it is all in the terms and none of it is in the flyer.

Check the age and ID rule

Physical identification is asked for at the door, and several venues also want the card used to book. A photo on your phone is regularly refused.

Decide the ride home first

Before you go in, not at 3 a.m. in a line. Save the hotel’s full name and its kilometer.

And if the night matters more than the strip

Downtown Cancún has a bar scene that has nothing to do with the Hotel Zone: smaller rooms, local prices, live music, and people who live here. It is a different evening, not a cheaper version of the same one, and it needs a taxi in each direction. The Cancún guide explains how the city and the strip fit together.

Playa del Carmen is the other option, though not as a night out from Cancún — that is an hour each way and a bad idea after midnight. It works if you are already staying there. The Playa del Carmen guide covers it.

What to look for if it does reopen

An actual date from the venue or the operator, and an active product on their own sales channel naming The City, the event date, what admission includes, the age rule and the change terms. Until all of that exists in one place, a reopening rumor is a rumor. Old prices and old lineups tell you nothing about a room that has been rebuilt.
