Where to eat in Tulum: seven restaurants and when to use each
Tulum has two completely separate places to eat and eight kilometers between them. El Pueblo does breakfast, tacos and seafood, cheaply and without ceremony. The beach road does wood-fire dinners that need booking weeks ahead and a plan for getting home. Deciding which one you are in tonight matters more than which restaurant you pick.
Pick the side of town before the restaurant
Hartwood, Arca and Kitchen Table are on the beach road. Getting to them from El Pueblo means traffic, almost no parking and a taxi at dinner time, which is when taxis here are most expensive. Taquería Honorio, Burrito Amor, Raw Love and El Camello Jr. are in town, where you can walk between them.
A dinner can get expensive before anyone opens a menu, purely because of where the table is. The Tulum guide explains the three separate areas — the archaeological zone, the pueblo and the hotel road — and why they are not interchangeable.
Seven restaurants doing seven different jobs
Hartwood
A beach-road dinner cooked over wood, with a menu that follows what came in that day. Book well ahead and treat it as the evening rather than a stop on the way to something.
Arca
Contemporary Mexican built around local ingredients and open fire. Check the current menu before booking — the dishes and the format change.
Kitchen Table
The third of the beach-road wood-fire trio. Same logic: a reservation and a plan for getting back.
Taquería Honorio
Cochinita, lechón and Yucatecan stews in town, from early. This is the breakfast people in Tulum actually eat, and it sells out.
Burrito Amor
Fast, reliable, in town, and the answer when you are between two things and need to eat in twenty minutes.
Raw Love
Plant-based and lighter. Note that the beach branch closed — the one that is open is in town.
El Camello Jr.
Seafood in the pueblo, busy at lunch, priced for people who live here. The ceviche is the reason.
By meal, not by ranking
Early breakfast
Taquería Honorio for the Yucatecan version; Raw Love if you want something lighter.
Lunch between stops
Burrito Amor for speed, El Camello Jr. for seafood and an hour at the table.
A planned dinner
Hartwood, Arca or Kitchen Table — all three need a reservation and a return ride thought about in advance.
A group with different diets
Read the current menu before moving everybody. A plant-based dish on an old blog post is not a plant-based menu today.
Prices, bookings and the ride home
No prices here: menus change with the season and the catch, and a number written into an article is a number that will be wrong. Check the restaurant’s current menu and ask whether service is included, which on the beach road it often is.
Book the popular tables directly with the restaurant rather than through a third party. For tacos and seafood in town, arriving before the lunch rush does more for you than any reservation system.
Where the table actually is
If the reservation is on the strip, the beach road guide covers the access, the traffic and the parking situation.
